Title: Image of the week 1st July 2012
Post by: Mick on July 01, 2012, 06:09:37 PM
Congratulations to Stars aka Roger, for winning Image of the week.

The image "Aster Zoom" was chosen by last weeks winner Dave.  It's a great image Roger, and a worthy winner of IOTW.

You can view and leave comments on Roger's image here, http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=12062
And you can see all the previous IOTW winning images here, http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=290

Just a reminder  The Serif MoviePlus Winner will be announced in the next couple of days, RL stuff still getting in the way ATM, apologies for the delay..

As mentioned, I've been away in the Lakes for the last few days and the weather wasn't that good for photo's, but I'll put a couple of them up when I get chance.

Many thanks to Dave for choosing my Aster. :D

Thanks all

Rog

I know I have not been around much recently due to work commitments but I was wondering what has happened to IOTW ?

I asked this question and got a bit  snapped at

Don't understand why no reply to my question. I thought IOTW was popular and looked good on the front page.

I didn't go back to read older posts on this subject, but, if I remember correctly, Mick is snowed under (or maybe rained on?) with work commitments, and hasn't been around much. Hence no IOTW.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Dave, I read this earlier and meant to come back to it.  The IOTW will return, just had to put it on hold for a while, as time was against me work wise.  Work is still hectic, in fact I've not seen it so busy at this time, normally dead as a dodo from the beginning of August.

I'm the only one who can edit the IOTW block without giving someone else full admin permissions.  I'm going to look into that a bit further. Also, Roger never came back to choose a pic.  This is another problem we have which needs fixing. ;)

Mick, maybe the 'chosen one' should recommend a  first and second choice for the next IOTW? If there is no new suggestion forthcoming, the second choice can be the next week's choice.
Does this make sense? And is it workable?

Thanks R.  well yes it does make sense, and is not a bad idea.   Noted. ;)  What does everyone else think of this idea?

I will repeat myself again.
The IOTW should come from those shots submitted that week, hence IOTW.
This way an image will be from someone who has been actually active and then we have more chance of him/her being around to select the next one.

Or, as someone suggested earlier, use the weekly comp image as IOTW. Easy peasy and  no prompting required

I agree with Alf..

I agree that a recent image would be best. It would possibly encourage more people to upload pictures, and thus create more interest.

Only a few people participate in the weekly competitions, so that would limit the possibilities.

What about the rules as before when the previous weeks winner chooses the next one, if one is not selected then ask that weeks competition winner to choose one? Alternatively get the competition winner to choose the IOTW as part of their "prize" for winning the competition?

How about a slight finesse on Colin's idea? Previous IOTW winner chooses the next from images uploaded in the past month, if no image has been chosen by the end of Monday then the weekly comp winner is IOTW. That way there will be no need to chase anyone for a choice, either the previous winner chooses a picture or the weekly comp winner is automatically posted.

I agree,
Choosing from the past 3 to 4 weeks seems very sensible, providing a wider scope to choose from. As is, the auto selection of the winning shot from weekly comp if the previous IOTW has not provided their choice. I also do not have a problem if the IOTW is chosen from a current entry in the weekly comp or a current Serif comp; simply as photography is subjective to personal likes etc., and everyones idea of a good shot is not necessarily the same.

Alright I'm ready for some Flak.

IOTW, does it really matter? Who has really missed it over the past weeks? Why keep something that only obviously attracts the attention of a relatively few members.

The weekly comp only gets half a dozen or so entries each week. I know it is a source of inspiration for some to get their thinking caps on and experiment with their photography, but if you are to choose an IOTW from competition entries you are confining the choice to a relatively few images. The gallery these days seem to consist mainly of competition entries anyway.

This can be the thin end of the wedge for members not continuing to be active and post on to the site, or even visit and miss out on all the info and banter that, for me, is the site's strength.

That's my two pennyworth.

No flak, but I miss seeing a large image of some merit on the opening home page!

Having a determination to improve my photography and hone my skills, IOTW provides a platform to aspire too. So I am pleased when a shot of mine is chosen; and indeed I miss IOTW, as the images are of others work that usually express and display a high standard in photographical skill and post processing abilities to encourage and inspire.

I think the suggestion is not to limit choice choosing from the weekly comp' but if an image in a comp is worthy of IOTW then let it be selected.

I am one of the ones guilty of not uploading many images. I play in the weekend comp from time to time but must admit pop in mainly for the advice / expertise. I suppose if I was to be encouraged to be more interested in the IOTW it would be if it was really the image of that week and I might even be encouraged to submit my best image of the week to see how it fared. Daft to limit any aspect of selection to the comp winner for as Alan says it is usually such a small field. I think as it was selection wise with the image to be taken in previous week to count would be the best for me making the winning image topical and current.

I don't think anyone suggested limiting selection of IOTW to weekly comp winner. But if the current IOTW bod fails to choose Mick has to find an image or not bother  :(  and as his time is a premium such ease to select the next IOTW would seem to me a sensible thing.

OK, just a small update.

I've got one of my coder friends working on a IOTW submit system, so the moderating team should be able to post the IOTW by filling out a couple of lines of text, and submitting it.  Should make things easier, especially as I'm not always around when needed.

Testing it atm, I'll keep you posted.  ;)

OK, Brad aka IchBin made a great job of coding this for us, the IOTW submit system is now in place on here, so all I need is the Global mod team to test it for me.  ;)
