Title: photo-freeware.net. Some more handy downloads
Post by: Mick on November 06, 2007, 10:09:26 PM
Not that I'm recommending any of the following downloads, because I haven't tried them all.  ;)  But here's a very handy page full of freeware programs.

Have you tried using Photomatix Basic? Its the free version, not as clever (and not sure how unclever tbh) but don't think it does a watermark.

Not sure, I think I have the demo of the full version, and as far as I'm aware the basic features work as is for the free version.   I seem to get the water mark on my pics though.  So either I'm needing features from the full version, or I'm using it wrong.  (probably the latter).   I'm not too clever at this editing lark.  :P

Funny you should mention that one, I do have it on my PC as I type.  Agreed it does work very nicely, and seems easy and fast to use too.  ;)

That Noiseware means that the ISO 1600 on me cam is now finally more than just a theoretical opportunity. Been scouting around for sh**ty light conditions all yesterday  :D.

:hehe: Andy since you mentioned it the other day, I've been playing with that program some more.   Must say it's pretty impressive for a freebie.   Can't believe I haven't made use of it before.  Do a lot of shooting at high ISO with my Canon, as I don't have any fast lenses.   This will come in very handy :)

Alf, it's noise reduction software.   Gets rid of excessive noise in your pics due to using high ISO, or under exposure.  ;)

Not good in low light then m8?   :(  Try running a couple of pics through it and see if they improve.   Nothing to lose.  ;)

probably just me not being familiar with the cam. I keep looking for butons and settings which I have on the D50. In fact I am finding this one harder to use than i did when i got the D50. The manual is not exactly user friendly and I am not renowned for my patience.

I reckon its worth a pop Alf. I don't know if you can do this with your camera but if you can I reckon it would be worth turning off the in cam NR and doing all your NR in Noiseware. Its amazing how much detail it keeps even when you're really shovelling on the NR and it doesn't give that awful 'oil painting' effect.

Yours

The Noiseware fanboy  ;D

Ive had a play with noiseware and some pics from different cameras etc and I must say I am impressed
Got some great results with it so I will stick this one on my hard drive.

Indeed, a handy piece of software Alf, and as it's free you can't beat it.      The thing that gets my vote is it's ease of use.  Some of the paid versions I've used are so complicated to use IMO.

Andy, looks like your not the only noiseware fanboy.  ;)

Yup. All the functionality but loads more convenient cos you don't have to go chopping and changing between apps and you get to keep your EXIF. Worked out to just under £30 in the end.

I just tried to download Free RAW Viewer from the site and my Anti Virus program (AVAST 4.8) said the link had a virus. Is my virus program overly sensitive or are some of the links dodgey?

Spinner, I just downloaded it and gave it a scan with Norton, and it found nothing.   Hopefully it was just a false alarm.  Good idea to check anything you download though.  ;)

I'm beginning to think Avast is a bit over sensitive. Better that than under sensitive I guess.  ;D
