Title: Weekend Comp. Chat Thread
Post by: skellum on January 30, 2009, 07:45:32 PM
Have we got a theme for the competion yet or is it open to suggestions :legit:
Title: Re: Weekend Comp
Post by: Hinfrance on January 30, 2009, 07:59:13 PM
I was waiting to hear back from Hugh on this one, but the theme that was suggested is 'Low Angle' - so any shot taken at an upward angle greater than horizontal.

So let's go for it - LOW ANGLE it is.

Usual DCM Weekend comp rules apply - picture must be taken on 31st January or 1st February and posted (where do we post them to?) before midday UK time on 2nd February.

I don't it's worth bothering with any of the other bits.

Let's all say a very very big thank you to CC for providing us with a home while the wreckage is repaired back in Bath. :)

THANK YOU!

Hi,

I've posted up the entry thread. I figure this one may as well be the chat thread.

Subject (from Tringle) is:

Low Angle: a shot looking up at something.

I've added an entries thread here (http://cameracraniums.com/forum/index.php?topic=282.0).

The DCM site is back up now - I accidentally clicked on the bookmark, and there it was . .

We need to consider what to do - I think, for what it's worth, that we should stay here this weekend, just to make sure that they have really fixed it. . .

Other thoughts please.

I agree. Let's carry on here as planned. You never know...

It would be nice to complete the last weekend's competition and set up its poll to run until, say Monday (3 days for voting as per normal?).

I'm up for that Hugh.

There is already activity over on the DCM forum thread for last weekend's competition. I think that we ought to post a 'redirect' to here for this weekends for all those we couldn't get hold of earlier.

Or should we just give up on this weekend too before it all gets too horrifically complicated and the name calling starts? lol :legit:

Great to see we have a site for this weekends comp. Great topic.
Would be nice to complete the voting on last weeks, I sure I had loads of votes before the DCM site went down :2funny: ::)

Great to see DCM back up and running.  8)

Spose if were not sure whether to hold it here or there, then we could do one here, and one there.  (different subjects of course).   That'll keep you all busy.  :D

Mick, I think now that you have set up the temp weekend comp for DCM it may be a good idea to keep it going after this week as ( Cranium weekend comp ) I am sure it will help keep the new members on this site as well as at  DCM and it may generate more interest than ( Cranium of the year )  Just a thought.  Off to the pub now  :legit:

hi all, so excited to see the weekend comp is alive and well.

i keep telling my children (teens) to get off the computer and interact with real people. the level of anxiety i've had this past week re: losing contact and then finding people via flikr just goes to show that i'm as technologically addicted as my offspring!  :D

now.. off to think of something to lie under to take a photo and do Uni assignments.. considering how i may even combine the two activities!

ok, having actually done some study, i rewarded myself by a quick trip to the backyard with my trusty 50mm. shot this lying under one of our palm trees. we have very overcast weather at the moment, so the sky is not blue, and somewhat blown out. but i think i might like it. am i deluded?

Not deluded at all - I  like your palm trees - I might do the same, although it's only 10C here, not 40C as I have heard it might be down your way. Oh and the trees I have in mind are in the supermarket car park.

I won't enter one, just I'm a hopeless copycat. ;)

Been too busy packing and cleaning today to take any pics - daughter moving to Melbourne on Monday to start her new job as apprentice hairdresser at Rokk Ebony. Hoping tommorrow will be a bit cooler so my brain might work with some ideas cause this heat has caused my brain to go to mush.

I've forgotten what heat is - certainly the outdoor kind  :(
I have a feeling the only place I'll be lying is in bed, I have a rotton cold which has turned MY brain to mush. Maybe I'll have a flash of imagination which will enable me to take a picture without too much effort.
Title: Re: Weekend Comp. Chat Thread
Post by: hevans on January 31, 2009, 11:31:45 AM
Well. if you're lying in bed, you could take a shot of the ceiling... that'd fit the brief.

Get better soon!

sorry to hear you aren't well carol... try and get lots of sleep in - usually one of the upsides of being ill  ::) (mmm, i love to nap in the afternoon, it's probably akin to a fav hobby of mine). of course, if you get any nice get well balloons, you could take some pics, as they float near your ceiling!

as for mine.. not sure if i'll enter that. i have considered doing some more lying down and shooting up, but given the weather, the ground is a bit soggy. but you never know, i might get some other idea. now, if only i lived in a mansion with one of those huge chandeliers......

now, if it was only 10C here, i might be inside too. anything below 20C and i'm too frightened to go outside ... i'm such a baby. but i guess years of living in the tropics does that too you.

rather than a pic of the trees in the supermarket carpark, i think you should post a pic of YOU taking that shot... just imagine, lying in the carpark. what would people make of that?  ;D

What a good idea Lisa !
Pity the pic's not "clickable", or is that not possible here ? It would be great to see it at full size.

I'm still coughing well, but refuse to take to my bed  :P The hounds have to be taken out anway. So I'll either have to give in to my fuzzy brain, or take myself off tomorrow with the camera.

Nice one Lisa. I got a few possibles today while out on the DCMAG meeting in London. Not stunners, but interesting I think and maybe worth posting. It was so sold my brain froze and I need to thaw a bit before I have the energy to process them. Thanks to CC for hosting the comp.

Not sure how everything works on here yet as so little time to try out but will try to enter what will no doubt be a sub-standard entry to keep up support and thanks to those enabling this temporary hosting. Don`t forget to vote on last weeks though after all that work by Trigle and hevans to keep slapping those polls on in the face of adversity. Great efforts by all concerned.
I hope I manage to post a pic OK as it will be mid-morning tomorrow before I get a chance.
Limited time as I went to an Andy Rouse / Warehouse Express event at Chester Zoo yesterday. Really good except it was too cold for the animals to be very co-operative. Some great images and simple lessons learned though. Biggest laugh was me having, almost reluctantly, ordered a Sigma 7-200 2.8 lens with "free" 2 x converter. The on a samll gear talk Andy told me what I already new really - save up for the Nikon instead - to which I turned to WE staff present to say well I think I`ll cancel the order. It would be silly to ignore the advice of the expert WE put in front of us!
Do you reckon it`s good advice?

I've hardly been outside apart from walking the dogs this weekend and my cold's stopping my head getting around the camera.
I've plastered a few pictures in the gallery though, so I suppose I have been doing something worthwhile.

Well no entry from me this weekend so good luck to all and some terrific shots as usual. Big decision made this weekend to move to a smaller place (4bed + study down to 2/3bed) as there is now only 3 of us in the house + 3 cats lol. So one skip full of rubbish and looks like another one before we are rubbish free. I cant believe what we have acumulated lol. Just hope the weather cools down so I can actually get some work done this week.

None here either although it has been trying to snow on and off throughout the day. Nothing more than a 10 or 15 minute light flurry though so far.

Got to drive down the M6 from South Manchester to Lutterworth early tomorrow morning so hoping the snow doesn't hit too bad  :-\

Decided on one of my Chester Zoo Andy Rouse seminar shots. We were allowed out to play in the zoo for a couple of hours but hardly any of the animals were out! Got this giraffe though in the grey flat sky that was here before the snow came to Leeds today!
Took me a while to work out how to post it and everyone seemed in random sizes so just posted to match majority. Some nice shots posted.

I'd be inclined to set up the poll back at DCM, but only because the number of people that can vote will be far larger and the historical record will be preserved on that site. But that's the only reason I can think of.

On the other hand, it would be nice to keep the whole thing in one place for this weekend... Perhaps we should have a poll to decide where the poll should be :)

Lurky, do you have a preference?

H.

Title: Re: Weekend Comp. Chat Thread

My thoughts exactly - I'm trying to work out the poll now - it looks like you will not have the images to chose from, so you'll need to make your choice and then nip over to the poll thread. I think. I've only just started on it. :o

OK done it now - I think - the pictures are below the voting form, and this weekend it is a secret ballot - you will only see the voting progress after you have yourself voted.

Just going to post a link from DCM

Good luck everyone.

Tricky one this.  Registrations are more than welcome, that's what I built this place for  ;) .  But what I don't want is to spam another site, which this could be considered.   Maybe just let this one roll, and then move it back to DCM for next week.

As for CC, if you guys want to stick around, and have any comps of your own, then your more than welcome to do so.   ;)  Either way,  I doubt it'll have any effect on DCM.

Hi Eileen - I posted it to DCM too http://community.dcmag.co.uk/photos/tringle_wps_gallery/images/948470/original.aspx and it is also on my flickr stream. So there are three places you should be able to see it, fingers crossed.

Well IMHO, the most important people, the entrants, are already registered and their votes are the most valuable as I see it.
A link to DCM not needed is my thoughts.
Well done to those who could be bothered to register here and take part, ensuring the comp continues.

A difficult choice but I went for one of OldBoy`s favourite buildings I think. I just love the shapes and textures and like the angle. Nicer sky would have been good but all been a bit grey and heavy lately. Could have been one or two others too and so glad you could host us on here and not miss a week.
First week in a while that I have not shot anything specifically for the comp but fortunately one of my zoo images fitted quite nicely with a bit of work.

thanks to whoever voted for me. i think that brief view of a non raining sky might be the only one i'll see for a little while. we are into our second month now of monsoonal rain. not helped by the remnants of a cyclone that crossed the coast about two hours north of us, so i may have to swim to work today.

i voted for tringle. maybe it's those fab boots, maybe it was the movement... no, i think it might have been the boots.  ::) might have to try and find some like that for myself :D

Hi everyone great set of entries this week once again I struggled between oggalily and jinkys but plumped for oggalily in the end just loved the look of intent on the baby's face (Hope you gave her the dolly back pretty soon :) )

Wattsy I preferred your pic of the flags especially in the larger size!

Thanks to whoever it was that gave me a vote :D
fwiw I think it would be good to keep something alive on this board whether in monthly comp format

Thanks for the votes, folks, and fear not - she was swiftly reunited with the dolly (which she had thrown herself, silly thing).

I've just noticed that the voting ends at 3:30 tomorrow - Tringle, is it possible to change it to midnight?  Not a big deal if not.

Hi Ogga, can't change the poll end date - I clicked the 'end after 2 days' button which it takes literally, so we're stuck with tomorrow afternoon, Im afraid. Typical of me, always pressing buttons just to see what will happen.

OK, there has been talk amongst the refugees from DCM about setting up a weekly or monthly competition over here, just to keep our eye in, as it were.

What thoughts people?

ok you were right lol

Congratulations! You are a Pinot Noir!

Smooth and elegant, James Bond and La Femme Nakita could take lessons from you. However, that quick wit of yours masks a sensitive nature that empathizes with other's needs and always offers a helping hand. And just like the Little Penguin Pinot Noir, that only makes you that much more enjoyable to have around.

But I do like being La Femme Nakita if I could partner James Bond  ;)

Looks like a wine tasting trip up to Qld - Mango and Wine/Port what a perfect combination

Well, no that anyone has mentioned it so far, but the voting has closed on the 'temporary' competition and Skellum is a very convincing winner - so well done Dave.

So that's the end of this one - we'll see how the poll goes for the new challenge that we're going to start here.

Mick, I don't know if you'll pick this up, but is it possible to move the poll I set up about this in the 'General' heading into the 'Competition' section?

Indeed! Well done Skellum!

I guess this means you have to put your thinking cap on for the subject of the CC week/month/<insert time frame here> competition.
