Title: Tablets
Post by: bones615 on April 30, 2012, 11:03:05 PM
Never had a tablet before so does anybody have any views on this.

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/29152895/Archos-80-G9-8-inch-250GB-Seagate-Hard-Drive-WiFi-3G-GPS-Android-4-0-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-Tablet-PC/Product.html?searchstring=archos+80&searchsource=0&searchtype=allproducts&urlrefer=search

My reason for looking at this one in particular is the 250gb hard drive for back up? movies on the move & through the tv,  surfing the net, gps built in (my sat nav is getting old) and maybe some games. Can even be used to read Ebooks.

I have used Archos media players in the past and they will play virtually any movie format, ideal for holidays and on the plane etc. the 250gb hard drive seems great compared to most tablets.
Read a lot of reviews some good some bad.

No, but I would have bought one if local retailers hadn't run out of stock. :'( I think they're a good buy for the money and the critiques I've read rated them well.

I've broken the screen on my tablet already. Damned stupid things. I'll be replacing it with a netbook, if I bother to replace it at all.

Oh, that's upsetting I'm sure. I've had mine for about 2 yrs. now and let both of the clumsies in my house borrow it with no issues (yet).

Mick,

Things to look for with Android tabs are the os - ice cream sandwich is bang on the latest, have it on my Galaxy S2, processor speed - 1.2ghz - fine for flash and multitasking and resolution - 800x480 low end so obviously where the corners are cut. Oh and always see that the tab has Google Play - there are other ways of getting apps, like GetJar, but limited choice and some are rather happy to put viruses and trojans on your new toy. This tab fits the bill for a cost effective, usable tab!

That looks a bit of a bargain, wish I'd seen it when I got my tablet.

Looks a rally good deal - make sure that it has google play - as mentioned above.

Also make sure it has a capacative touch screen not a resistive one. The very cheap ones usually have resistive and don't allow multi-touch pinch zoom etc.

. . .  unless you have 'magic' fingers like I do, in which case a capacitive screen (like on my 'phone) is a nightmare.

But anyway the spec on this one says capacitive :)

Looks a deal but only 8gb of memory? Ahh micro sd slot - will it have usb ports too do you think? be interested to know how sharp / crips the screen is for images as I can see it for sale elseweher too at that price or abouts but no reviews. I know H would castigate me but having looked long and hard at the ipad with it`s superb screen it`s hard to imagine this coming anywhere near for showing images though fine for other stuff

I'm sure the iPad will have a much better display - they are the iPad's best feature.

But not the lack of memory expansion, any kind of non Apple wireless connectivity (without laying out loads more money for a selection of proprietary adapters and having to lug them around with you), not to mention the size and weight and horrific price. And non 16-9 screen (what aspect ratio is it anyway?). I'm ignoring the 3G connectivity here since a contract for that in la Belle costs more than keeping the car full of petrol. However, most people only use their tablets with WiFi anyway.

My broken €89 tablet plays video beautifully through the built in HDMI output. And yes, even this cheapo has a USB port and Micro SD slot. The screen wasn't too shabby either, for the money, until I broke it.  ;)

You pay your money and you make your choice. If it's Shiny™ you want, then it has to be Apple.

Well I parted with my hard earned and bought this, should be here tomorrow.

Got carried away after my initial idea but it seems like a good deal, i know there is a new version out and it does not have 3g but it has good reviews and should do all I want.
