Have been having issues with my D200 and as part of my problem solving I thought it would be worth doing a firmware update, but, when I download and extract the bin files to the hard drive or card they appear as VLC files which are video files and neither the pc or cam will read these.
Anyone know how I can upgrade this firmware ?

I am going to assume Windows. The exe you download should extract two files, with the extension .bin. Are you saying they have a .VLC extension or that VLC wants to open them? VLC by default associates itself with .bin files. You can ignore this and follow the instructions from Nikon to upgrade the firmware.

I was placing the files inside a folder on the card instead of on top tier ::) ::)

Yes, I had to do that as well on my Canon. Only ever had one firmware update for it. I find being on the most recent firmware to be a good thing in most cases. My day job is in IT, so I have lots of things with firmware.
