Title: Lightroom 4 - New LOW PRICE
Post by: picsfor on March 06, 2012, 09:38:30 AM
This wonderfully updated version of LR is now available for purchase.

I've already dived in because the beta version ran much faster and drained the system resources much less than LR3.
And that's without the various improvements they've made, including the ability to create and order a Blurb Book from within LR or create a PDf eBook for distribution.

You can download the trial and give it a go - and the upgrade cost is only £60 inc vat and free delivery during March.

The full product is now being sold for ONLY £103 - that's under half the price of LR3...

As some one said, almost as cheap as Elements...

I'm glad I didn't take up the offer to buy LR3 at a discount, because LR4 is cheaper, Just downloading it now :)

I was about to buy Aftershot Pro, but at just over £100 LR is good value. I've always liked the DAM, I'll just have to get used to the other bits. :-[

I can hardly believe Adobe are actually charging a reasonable price for something.  :D

Typical, I;ev just bought a Wacom wireless tablet that came with LR3 - still, was a good price regardless and I think its still compatible for the upgrade - I've been using LR4 beta and think I like it.

A shameless plug for my Amazon adds, lol..  Not that they have it in stock ATM.

Not sure the student and teacher addition is much of a saving, but here it is.

Damn! Missed your ads and paid a few quid more direct from Adobe.

Note to self, check Mick's ads in future.  :uglystupid2:

I think it might be cheap because it keeps crashing, failed to properly convert the LR3 catalogue that I had from my previous trials, and if I try to create a new catalogue from the same files it comes up almost 10,000 files short (about 30% of the target images), claiming that they are unreadable. Hmmm.

Do they do money back?

Later: Ran import on the new catalogue again, and this time it did much better. Think I've got them all now. ;)

Strange, Amazon Canada isn't even offering LR 4.

I was actually shocked at how many companies at Focus were giving away LR3 with random purchases.  Wacom tablet, D800, 40 grand Hasselblad....

Thanks for the heads up - I'll get it ordered.  Literally no point for me in downloading the trial.

'k just paid the Adobe tax....

1. Still utterly disgusted with their "environmental policy".  Their download servers are in Ireland which attract a higher rate of vat than their shipment warehouse (in NL I think).  Delivery is currently "free".  So, it's cheaper to ask them to burn the data to a disk that's basically made out of oil, wrap it in some dead trees and drive it in a lorry burning diesel than to send it down a cable (which would involve literally a tiny amount of electricity).

2. Quidco.  8% cashback.  Sorted.

I know I am late, but it had it the first day.  It was hard to find.   I ordered the upgrade and it is supposed to ship 14 March.  I should have ordered from Adobe, I would have it by now.

Ordered it from Adobe on Wednesday last, it arrived on Friday (from Holland). Loaded it up this a.m. and not yet tried it. Not too sure if I want the Map feature, seems a bit superflous to me and of little use if you haven't got GPS, whatever that is.

Now where was I? ???

It was one of those areas that Adobe were getting severe grief from those who kept saying Apple give it away with iPhoto and that's xx years old, and Aperture does it even better.

I don't mind it - i use it as a visual tag - want pics from this place or that - go to the map tool.

I'm rather pleased they've finally decided to give all the sliders proper names instead of names from a Times crossword.

In relation to what Jonathan said, not surprised people were giving it away, cos it was Tuesday at Focus that LR4 got launched. Forget which 'member of staff' gave the secret away that Monday night after all was closed, a whole raft of Adobe people suddenly descended upon the place with LR4 banners and box loads of stuff. I'd downloaded before Victoria Brampton even made an announcement on Twitter, let alone Adobe...

Running LR3 side by side with LR4 for the mean time, but all 2012 pictures are now only in the LR4 catalogue - will eventually convert older stuff into LR4 until LR3 is no longer needed.

Right, off to learn how to use the book module, i think that could a useful feature for future - especially the eBook option.

I've been having a play with it and think the 'white' and 'black' slider in the develop mode is a great improvement over the old 'fill light' and 'Black' slider setup on L/R3.

The new setup gives a much better control over highlights and shadow detail within a particularly contrasty image than I could achieve with the previous system.

Can't see much, if any change in the Print module, but then I've always been a fan of that facility.

So far so good.

I think the exposure compensation slider is much more effective than before too.

Haven't tried the print module yet . .

I was just about to order this until I checked the min specs for it.  :(
I'm still using XP on my lappy so it looks like I am under-spec for it to run smooth.
Will have to make do with my 2.7 Vers

I'm beginning to get to grips with the changes, and very much liking this version (taking aside it runs leaner on my Mac).

I am deliberately running side by side with LR3 because i just want all images in LR4 to be processed using 2012 processing engine. I might be making some work for myself, but whilst i have the time - i might as well use it inefficiently!

Just makes me wonder what Apple can possibly offer with Aperture that could impact this version of LR?

My guess is they already have impacted this version.

Aperture used to cost £loads and then along came the app store and made it very cheap.  This is the next LR release after that change and LR is less than I expected.....

In other news.....open the CD case and look closely at the pics.  The left hand one looks very like an H4D with a tether cable but

1. the cable is in the wrong place
2. LR doesn't yet support the H4d (or any Hasselblad) tethered.....

Been doing some printing, both colour and mono, and the additional two sliders in the print module, brightness and contrast, help to fine tune the process, whereas before there was occasionally a need to tweak the exposure a little to end up with a print you were satisfied with.

I bought a car once and the brochure showed it with a bird on the bonnet, she wasn't there when it was delivered.! ;)

I feel, as they say, your pain.....  This is a little more like buying a car because the advert shows it driving on water only to find out they are lying.

Hasselblad expert reckons it's actually a Hasselblad with Leaf or Phase back.  They ain't supported either.  Since he's clearly shooting Lightroom 4's signature image that's somewhat odd.

In other news, performance is currently atrocious.  I'll let the Mac calm down (for some reason it's rebuilding its Spotlight cache of about 6 TB of data and LR is building previews that I didn't really ask it to).  If it's no faster tomorrow I'll be using LR3 until the next point release comes out and/or asking for a refund.

OK - performance is back to "normal".  I'd guess maybe 10% slower than LR3 but I can live with that.  And it may go away.

I've found it to be much faster than 3, especially catalogue import. Although synchronize folder seems to be a bit slow at times.

I normally right click on the shot to export, LR3 the menu comes straight up, LR4 is taking maybe 6-8 seconds for the menu to come up.

Um, no.  That would be a bizarre thing to do.

So in general we're in favour of big companies using market dominance in one arena to attempt to destroy another company's market share in another?  I seem to remember M$ losing a pretty big legal case over that......

A little more on LR4.

The softproofing facility is definetly worth a try. Whilst I've got my screen/printer/paper profile pretty well organised for colour and toned images, the soft proofing facility does help get everything 'spot-on' as far as colour replication is concerned.

Question for the lightroom users here.
I have a new lappy on the way and intend to buy and install the latest version of LR4 on it.

I do have "a version" of LR2.7 installed on the XP  laptop I am using at the moment and was wondering if it is easy to transfer the back ups, and libraries etc from that to the new machine once LR4 is purchased and installed ?
TIA

A friend of mine did something somewhat similar after buying a new PC and succeeded in getting it right, but he said it was a bit time consuming!

It was L/r 3 from XP to the latest operating system.

Good luck

I did the upgrade from 3 to 4. At the end of install it will ask if you want the catalogues etc. from pevious versions to work on LR4. So for that to work you will have to copy and paste the old .CAT file and the pictures on the new machine first. ( at an identical file address) The way I would do it is installing the oldLR on the new machine, copy and paste the .CAT file and transfer all my images to the new PC. Than run LR and ensure it can find all the images with the adjustments. If it cannot find them it is easy to point it to the new directory where your pics are. when everything is OK, install the new version of LR and agree for the old version to integrate.
As said before it will take ages!!!! Not just minutes but Hours! I have a fast machine but I left it running overnight, so plan that in.
I did have a vast amount of pictures however.

The short answer from this side of the channel is NO. I had a LR3 trial and built a full catalogue. I have not been able to get LR4 to import it. It runs for a few hours then crashes, without fail.

Allegedly Adobe have fixed this, but it still doesn't work.

Definitely worth buying though.

You could try over at Lightroomforums.net.  There are many experts over there that can give you step by step instructions for this.

Hi Don, yep, they are very helpful there.

I went there and even got a personal reply from the Lightroom Queen (or one of her minions writing under her name). They told me to do exactly what I had already been doing - still didn't merge. So what I do now is just open the old catalogue under LR4 when I need to look at it. Maybe LR5 will be able to do what Aftershot Pro can, and open more than one catalogue at a time.

I do not think she has minions, I am pretty sure it her.  She is very helpful and knowledgeable.  Have you tried again after each update to LR4?  4.3 is out now.

I`m still on Lightroom 3.6. Is it worth the upgrade to LR4? Was initially reading that people thought it was slower and clunkier. Have further  updates resolved that/ Is it worth me shelling out another £55?
Title: Re: Lightroom 4 - New LOW PRICE

I get terribly puzzled when I read all the negative comments about L/R, i.e clunky, slow, unable to do this or that with it, problems with catalogues and printing etc.

I use it all the time, and have just downloaded the 4.3 upgrade. I suppose I'm tempting fate but it seems to work perfectly as far as I'm concerned and there again perhaps I'm not using it to its full capacity. I've got some 8,000 images on there built up over 5 years, 80% of those could be dumped, perhaps the more you load the slower and clunkier it gets, but I can't forsee any vast increase over time since I can't take any meaningful photographs in any great quantity.

" If I knew how to take great photographs, I'd take one every time" R Doisneau. ::)
