Post by: Mick on December 26, 2011, 12:02:05 PM
Poll now up for top three, IOTW, year end finalists.  Please vote asap.  Poll running for three days.

I've set for guests to vote, not sure if that function works, but thought I'd give it a shot.  Let me know if anything needs changing.  ;)

Well done Reinardina, Nick, and Dave for getting into the top three.

Hope you're all having a great Christmas.

Obviously didn't vote for myself, so I studied the other two pictures with even more attention. Is it me, or do the expressions in both photos look very similar?

How's the take up by guests?

It's nice to know it's, yet again, a close run thing. Maybe someone can turn it into a tryptich?

Surely the same person could vote for themselves logged in as a guest, it is not very hard to connect on different ip addresses.

This is a well known website and there are hundreds like it.

Ah but you see, you're forgetting the exploits of the 1 Star bandit.
The administrators of this site are well versed in such tactics.
It's easy to spot a 'trend' whereby a dozen votes come in for some one, all listed as 'guest' in an hour or two.

The days where you could do such things and get away with a almost gone - and this site thankfully still has people as admins not employees of a large corporation.

I feel confident about voting on this site. A lot of things go on that we don't always know about, but eager admin's stop the nasties from interfering with it.
How a good site should be run, we don't want to know unless it's a site wide issue...

I can see Geoff's point, and it's a valid one, which is why I probably wouldn't set it like this again.  But I'm trusting you guys to keep it fair.

ATM, there's 25 votes, and it's so close you wouldn't believe it.  :o  More votes required methinks.

I can also see Geoff's point, i suppose i've come to use to the security that you and Howard offer on this site.
T'is a difficult one to be sure  :-[

Only reason I mentioned that is because I was an administrator on another forum and a poll got exploited through proxy sites, I doubt it will happen here because of the number of votes that come through.

Thanks for setting up the poll Mick   This really has turned into quite a drama of a comp. If only I had chosen a IOTW is the first place we would not have had to go through all of this.  Next time I have one of my brainstorming ideas for a comp I will think it through properly including the voting... :-[

We now have a leader in the poll, so I won't have to sign on as a guest through a proxy server to give things a nudge  8)

I'm sure none of the members of CC would abuse the voting system as it is.

Maybe I am too trusting, or naive, (which admittedly, I sometimes am, in spite of my age) but I simply cannot believe any of 'us' would rig up several votes, just to influence the outcome of this, relatively small, competition, where winning is an honour.

I agree with Reinarda. I don't think anyone one here would do that. Wouldn't it be alot of hassle trying to go through a proxy server just to vote? Thats why this site is so good. No one making snidey remarks or putting other people down

I have now voted! Not being around for the last couple of days I have to say well done to the top three  and it was a good idea to have another shootout(!). It was a tough choice and as been said before they are all worthy of winning!

Interestingly enough, I use OpenDNS as my DNS Server - as I can restrict the types of sites viewable on any connected device (With the kids having web enabled devices it will help restrict their viewing!) and this site was blocked.

Oh, and I've voted now!

Well we have ended up with another tie.. :'(  But never mind.  Congratulations to Reinardina and well done to Nickt. Also thanks to those who voted for my entry.. As for the prize well I don't actually need it so I think Reinardina should have it.

As for sharing IOTW I think it may be best for my entry to take the last three days of the year as I have already had IOTW for the last 10 days Then Reinardinas entry can take over on New Years day for a full week and then hopefully we will be back on track.

Let me know what you think....

Boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, I am thrilled to bits and, to be honest, stunned.
Another tie, and I'm still in it ... unbelievable.

Thank you to all who voted for me, and to Hevans and Andy who nominated me.

Dave, and Nickt too, congratulations on this shared success. Dave, your proposal for IOTW is fine by me, as long as you don't mind 'losing out.'

After the 'Exodus,' when almost all of the best photographers left PR and found refuge here, Andy tried to persuade me to follow.
I hesitated for a long time, as I was in awe of most of you, and convinced I wasn't good enough. In the end I did sign up though, and found you not half as frightening as I expected. Quite the opposite; warm and friendly and welcoming. And a bit grumpy at times, but getting older myself, I can cope with that!

There's still a long way to go for me, but, I do have the occasional breakthrough (read luck), which results in a good photograph.
As in this case.

As for the prize ... I still haven't quite worked out the ins and outs of my Elements 8, but I'm convinced it does (eventually) everything I need.

I happen to know, that Andy (Beauxreflets) could do with new software; I've got a vague recollection of a remark he once made to that extent, on one of the forums. If Dave agrees, as it's his prize as well as mine, would it be possible to donate it to him? This is probably very unorthodox, but this has been a very unorthodox competition.

If Dave, or anybody else, disagrees, I'll leave it with Mick to offer it as a prize for another competition.

Well, this was my 'Oscar Speech,' and I managed it without blubbing!

It's back to the kitchen for me now! Catch up later.

Reinardina.

And we ended up with three pictures which, at first sight are totally different - but each one is a 'decisive moment' shot which would make you go 'yessss!' when it was downloaded!!

:-[ Yes I have to admit I am still using very basic software programs and Serif has a couple of operation options that would be handy to be able to do with ease - Spare cash always seems to end up on essentials like car repairs or the children's education that has to come first.

Maybe it should be offered to Nickt first before any decision is made as he was the runner up in the competition... :)

Actually glad you said that Dave, I was about to say the same.  If Nick doesn't want it, then I'll send it to whoever you and Reinardina nominate.  ;)   I know it's not the latest version, as X5 http://www.serif.com/ has been out a couple of months now, but X4 is pretty good.

Price has dropped dramatically now though.   :o http://www.serif.com/photoplus/phpx4.asp  That's what I like about Serif products, if your not in a hurry to have the latest version you normally end up buying it for peanuts.

I use X4 myself, along with Elements 6, and DPP.

My view is rather simple - it goes with the majority view of the 3 finalists, which in this case recommend letting Andy have the prize.

It will be much appreciated, and it would be good to see some make use of this package and demonstrate how good it is - and why you don't need PS etc just to manage your pics.
I made it clear in the first Serif comp that i would be entering - for the sake of entering and supporting the site, but that i would not be needing the prize and would rather see it go to some one who has a great need for such a package.

For me, this has finally been achieved.
Well done all three, and Andy who now has a new toy to play with.

Thank you. Coming (shared) first in this competition, is the highest accolade achieved so far. Never fought off such stiff competition before!

I'm glad Andy will get the software, as I know he'll use it.
