Title: Canterbury Meet 4th July (Sun) Note New Date
Post by: picsfor on May 27, 2010, 12:02:09 PM
During the time at Cornwall, a discussion arose about tripping down to Canterbury - so this post forms the proposal for such a meet.

Now confirmed for Saturday 3rd July.

Meeting point is at Jonathan's Gallery and a tour. Details at PeoplebyRyan.com
Into Canterbury via the West Gate (Gardens) and then into the town for a bite to eat.
After lunch either into the Cathedral (£8 entry fee but worth it cos you can use a tripod) or some of the other attractions - and there are plenty.

There is much to see and photograph and it will not all be covered in a day. Good weather will probably make it a long day.
There is plenty of choice for refreshments.

I suggest that road transport would be best for this trip as the journey time will be shorter and if the costs shared - much cheaper.

26th I have a wedding all day.  Other 3 days AT THE MOMENT are clear (though I often use Sundays for short notice client meets.)

If I'm still free on the day then we could start with a  tour of my gallery (really, that won't take long) and take it from there.

Some ideas for things to do in Canterbury (copied from an email I sent Andrew ages ago)

Stuff to photograph in Canterbury....

Cathedral (yeah obvious) but they let you take tripods in and everything.  If you do go then make sure you visit the Chapter house (go outside into the cloisters and wander)
Boat rides.  There are 2 spots for this.  There are the punts down near Westgate (see later) and the tourist boat trips near the Weavers House.  If you like that kind of thing then the tourist boats are an enjoyable trip (or they were about, err, 15 years ago...)
Westgate Gardens - go to the Westgate (big Roman arch at the end of the highstreet) and as you are heading out of town take a left.  This is where the punts are.  The gardens always look lovely.
Palace Street - lots of odd little shops (including the crooked door one), pub signs etc
Miller's Arms - not just a place for a sandwich and a pint - there's a mill race there too.
Buttermarket - always lots going on and a nice pub.
Don't know if St Augustine's Abbey will be open (it's owned by the King's school and they can be a bit funny)

And the likely hood of you booking something up on Saturday 3rd July?

If that day is gonna be free maybe that would be the best day to visit?

Can definitely echo the West Gate Gardens and the Cathedral - didn't get to see the other stuff!

Sounds good to me Andrew.  :) Look forward to seeing you all there, and hopefully we will find a time when Jonathan's free too.

Who knows?  A week or so I only had one wedding in July.  Now I have 3 and that's the only free Saturday ;)

You'll get some more.

There's next year - where you might get 2.

Of course you can always arrange your own with other fellow togs in the Frankfurt area...

Shame but not sure at the moment whether I can make the Canterbury day. Iam doing a evening class that meets on Sat to take photos. I will let you know later if Iam free. Sure you will have a great time and get loads of photos.

Don't be.  They are pretty downmarket affairs.  Practically slumming it.

They are here (http://www.leeds-castle.com) here (http://www.hevercastle.co.uk/) and here (http://www.turkeymill.com/) .  Nothing to be jealous of.

Now if a prospect I picked up yesterday works out then you'll have reason to be jealous ;)

Gosh darn it another meet I can't make... :'( going to Devon on 25th June right through until the 6th July...
Have a fab day out though guys and gals and maybe one day I'll make one of these darn things....

Keith,

there will be many others as you know. I suspect this will not be the only trip to Canterbury.
I know i still have room for 3 or 4 more trips given how much there is to view and photograph.

Thanks Andrew it just always seems that when I check the meets either myself or Georgia has arranged something already lol never mind I am sure there will be many other meets as you say.
I did suggest to Martin after the Hyde Park shoot last year that maybe we could do a Brighton shoot, as I would love to try and get some nice shots of the lanes and so on, plus of course the obvious old "burnt out pier at sunset shot". I reckon we could have a right royal day out, and we could either get the train down there (so we could sample so local bevvies in the local hostelries) or depending on how many people if any are up for it I would be happy to drive down (now the proud owner of an S reg Mondeo fully loaded with electric everything and air con) if people are happy to chip in for the old gogo juice....As I said though have a FABULOUS day out guys and gals and post some shots....suffering from a lack of inspiration at the moment...

So....what's happening on this?

3rd July is still open for me so if you want a nose round the gallery we could do that.  (I might be yawning a bit as I have to drive to Somerset and back that week.)

Special bonus for anybody who feels like making a weekend of it (no, you'd have to find your own accommodation...).  I have a new shoot location I'm dying to try.  It's a beautiful house with 30 acres of gardens, woods and outbuildings.  Oh and a swimming pool.  Total cost to hire is about £200 :( but if anybody wants to join me on a group shoot on the Sunday we can split costs.  I'll bet I could persuade a couple of models to turn up....

This is a definite Jonathan.

It will be bumped up again the week before when i will confirm meeting time and place.
I know those confirming attendance will want to see your gallery if the offer is on.

I still have the directions to get there and Irv has a Sat Nav so that's covered most of the getting there needs.

I'd love to see the gallery if possible Jonathan. The Sunday shoot sounds great too but sadly other commitments mean I won't be able to make it.

I missed this bonus and have now advised that i, like Irv, would be keen to attend.
Any one not done a shoot like this should take the opportunity - a great time to be had, plenty of fun and support with some pleasing pictures to show for your efforts at the end.
It's not a requirement to attend Canterbury on the Saturday to attend this - this is something different, and maybe more to some peoples taste.

Rest assured Jonathan will soon fill the spots so get in quick

Um, if we had to move the first day to the Sunday and the Sunday to some time later....could people make the 4th instead of the 3rd?

Something may have come up....
Title: Re: Canterbury Meet 3rd July (Sat)

I'm easy on the Sunday 4th and i think Irv is - not sure about Eileen and haven't heard off any one else as yet.

I suspect Eileen would love to be able to make a photo shoot with models etc so if she couldn't make the Sunday...
Title: Re: Canterbury Meet 3rd July (Sat)

I can make the 4th, just not both days that weekend (and you're right Andrew I'd really like to do the model shoot if that was possible).  :)

OK - good thing I changed the date.  I was actually planning to sneak up to London on the Saturday to shoot the Pride march.  But I booked a short notice wedding and a very gorgeous venue :)

Anyway, roll call - who's on board?

Ok, it is the week of the meet, and it is time to finalise things...

I'm definitely in, and i believe Eileen is, as well as Irv - though they might pop in to confirm this themselves.
Haven't head off Martin - i expect he was dependent on the football so he's probably available now

Sandy is interested subject to train service though i think she's just up the road so don't think it's a big issue...

Do you want to meet near your Gallery then Jonathan - say about 9-10 ish or meet up West Gate Gardens?

Yeah it's cool for everyone to meet here.  Plus nothing really happens in Canterbury before 10 on a Sunday.

Why don't you all meet up at the gallery between 9 and 10 and we can head into town at 10ish and take it from there.

You can find the location on my website (http://peoplebyryan.com/contact) - click the map for a Google route planner.  Or just SatNav to CT2 8ES.  You'll find yourself in a residential road.  Go all the way to the end, through the hedge and it's the blue building.  You want to park before you go through the hedge.  Plenty of street parking but please be considerate of my neighbours.  It's fine to block my drive (the one with the big hedge and silver Skoda but not theirs ;)

What do people want to do on Sunday?  I can put some suggestions together.  Everyone seems to like Westgate Gardens and the Cathedral.  And there's always lunch to think about.

Chaps, I'm pretty busy between now and Sunday ( in Somerset right now shooting cover feature for mag, shooting more and driving back tomorrow, client meeting & wedding on Saturday...).

Can you post up the kind of things that you're interested in - historical, yours, flowers whatever and also what you are thinking of for lunch (pub, pizza, sandwich whatever) and I'll get some ideas together.
Title: Re: Canterbury Meet 4th July (Sun) Note New Date
Post by: Eileen on July 01, 2010, 08:39:35 PM
Sorry you can't be there Martin.

Jonathan: I'd like to see the gardens and the cathedral but beyond that I'm quite relaxed and happy to go with the flow. More greenery and more historical sites would be very nice but others may well have different ideas. We need places that are relatively accessible with not too many stairs.

Foodwise I need a veggie option. A pizza joint or a pub lunch would be very nice. Somewhere we can sit and relax and chat for a bit would be good too (as opposed to a place where the emphasis is on moving customers through quickly).

Sorry guys I have been a bit busy this week to get on the forum but I am still up for this
As for what we will get up to on sunday, I would like to get up to a bit of street photography ( the more freaky the folks the better ) and to try some stuff in the cathedral sounds like a good idea I would suspect Eileen Sandy and Andrew would like that too - eats, anything that doesn't include  pizza, cauliflower or cherries  :)
Title: Re: Canterbury Meet 4th July (Sun) Note New Date
Post by: picsfor on July 01, 2010, 09:03:01 PM
so - no pressure then Jonathan.
West gate Gardens can be seen en route from Jonathan's into town if memory serves from the map.
This covers a bit of greenery and history.
The town centre is absolutely full of street photography and history - you can't miss it - it's just knowing the lesser known places that a local would have knowledge of!
The Cathedral is in the centre and easily accessible.

No not much in terms of hills but a few steps around some of the places but we are only talking 4 or 5 so not heavy duty stuff and that's mainly in the Cathedral.
Some where to eat that fits all the bills? Take your pick - really that much choice...

Oh and hope the weather holds out for your shoots Jonathan

Hi

I have been studying train timetables and the first train I can catch is the 0803 from Maidstone West. I have to change trains at Paddock Wood and arrive at Canterbury West at 0921. This appears to be the only route.

Looking forward to Sunday, its been very warm today

Cool.  So a place that sells pizza and non pizza plus veggie will do :)

@Sandy (and anybody else who finds themselves at a station) - call me on 07703 261 274 and somebody will pick you up.  If you have a choice of stations then head for the West.

Oh and blimey - we need to hit the Cathedral at 12:30 - it's only fully open at 12:30 - 14:30 on Sundays :(

As i'll be arriving about then, if you want i'll pick Sandy up and then poodle round the corner (if i've read my map right ).

I believe the West Station still has an old style signal box i need to get some pictures of - so it would fit in with my plans as well. Now i'm able to give some time over to this trip again.

Looking forward to the trip - see you all in the morning.

Mick - any chance of a gallery thing to put our piccies in. Doesn't half provide some interest when the trip piccies get uploaded...

Well, the day went of but what along day! Bloody traffic left me out until 21:30.
Had a good time, got to see Jonathan's den of persuasion and several of his finer photographic examples.
Also got to see some different parts of Canterbury and maybe gain a few shots along the way. Maybe even one for the weekly comp!

It was good to see Sandy, Eileen and Irv again as well as always. I'm now off to bed as i'm up at 4am for work so pictures will be processed tomorrow (Monday).
Once again, thanks to Jonathan for his hospitality and input in to today's get together.

Great to meet everyone yesterday.  Hope Irv and Eileen had a good trip home.

I was going to post a pic in the gallery but after 5 mins I still couldn't find an upload button.....

This is one of my favourite bits of the cathedral.  The shrine to martyrs of our time.  I often light a candle for Amnesty prisoners.

My daily allowance of pictures posted in the Canterbury Meet Gallery without any problem, and 1 further picture used for the weekly competition.
I have a few more that require some more serious processing and may even involve opening up Photoshop

I'm fairly sure that better pictures will be forth coming once the others have posted theirs.

But I found the upload button!  It was hiding under the house.  You have to roll over the house not click it to find it....

Hi all, glad everyone got back safely. I was home sometime after 9pm and Irv will have been a little later. I had a great time. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Canterbury and Jonathan's studio. Not sure if I covet the studio or the garden it sits in more. Just generally jealous I think.  ;)
Glad you got some keepers Andrew and Sandy. I like your cathedral picture Jonathan: I watched you taking it but hadn't picked up the significance of the chapel. It'll be some time before I work through all the pictures but here are a couple to be going on with.

The first shows Jonathan patiently posing amidst the graffiti. If you look carefully you can see a few fellow photographers reflected in his shades.

The 2nd shows Andrew getting that rather nice pulpit shot.  :)

Must say thanks initially to Jonathan for his hospitality and guiding skills around Canterbury (if only he had predicted to traffic jam on the way home) and to Eileen Sandy and Andrew for a really enjoyable day out. I have had a bit of long day so I get round to sorting out the pics and posting soon :)
