I'm a bit confused. OK that's normal, but this really is making me scratch my head.

On my Vista desktop I have a 100gb partition for progs, OS and app data files, which, let's be honest, should be loads.

Explorer and the OS are telling me that the drive is full.

Treesize is telling me that it isn't even close to full.

So who is telling the truth?

The amount of space showing free on C:\ according to explorer changes wildly throughout the day. Last evening before I turned the PC off there were more than 10gb showing as free. This morning that's all gone.

Both could be telling the truth.  :o

My guess is it could be your swapfile size that is causing the confusion. Check how much disk the swapfile can access as maximum and reduce as required.

Or have a look here, http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/unused-hard-drive-space-unavailable-307307.html

I know Vista can be a bit generous with handing out System restore, and shadow copy space.

Thanks Mick and OB.

I decided to run my Glary Utilities disk analyser (don't know why I didn't do it before, but as I say, I am generally confused . . ) I can't praise this utilities suite enough - just brilliant - anyway, I digress:

This shows the culprit in all its glory - the search index.

Now all I need to do is to work out how to stop it . . .

There's an option to move the location of the search index, so I moved it.

Almost 30gb free now.
