Title: Urban funky model shoot THIS SATURDAY
Post by: Jonathan on April 05, 2010, 08:18:44 AM
I've arranged a shoot for one of the groups on Flickr.  I'm doing it at very short notice so there are some places available that I'm keen to fill and you'd all be very welcome (well, up to the numbers limit...).

Date: Saturday 10th April (Yes, THIS Saturday)
Time: 9am - 2pm (we have to be clear of the site by 2pm)
Place: Near Romford in Essex.  Just over the road from Harold Wood BR station and apparently there's parking.

The good stuff:
We will have......10 photographers, 8 models, 2 make up artists and......the old abandoned Harold Wood Hospital.  Google it or hit it up on Flickr.  There are literally dozens of abandoned rooms including nurses accommodation, mortuary, stairwells, corridors.  Everything.  [Note: we have permission from the owners to shoot there and are paying them for access]

Cost: TOTAL cost of the shoot will be £250 so if we get 10 photographers it will be £25 each.  Bargain.

Type of shoot: This is being organised for a Strobist group so if you have experience of off camera flash or want to learn from those around you that will be perfect.  There will be no formal instruction but most people are happy to help.  We'll have loads of urban dereliction and a bunch of models.

Very limited places so (1) if you say you can go I'll expect you to pay your share even if you don't make it (2) get in quick.  Probably best to PM me.

There's also a hard limit of 20 bodies on site so photographers, models and MUAs only are allowed there.

Having spoken to Jonathan, i can assure you, you will have a great time Irv. As said, under different circumstances Eileen would have jumped at this chance as well.

Of that I will have no doubt Andrew but it's a case of my youngster getting to football, if other arrangements can be made then its a goer but I wouldn't want to say yeah then not be able to make it- I'll speak with Jonathan tomorrow

Oh.  Wow.

Andrew I hope you had as good a shoot as I did.  Some of the pics at the end were pretty special.

Everybody else - you missed a KILLER shoot :)

I would like to thank Jonathan for organising this and allowing me to attend and also to the other attendees who made this such an enjoyable day out.
For those who didn't attend - you really did miss a great day out.
Without a doubt there will be some shots i am happy with - no where as good as Jonathan's or the other photographers -but enough for me.
More important is how much i learned a lot from today's exercise to take forward to a next time - because once you've done this you can become a little bit hooked.

If ever one of these opportunities comes your way - grab it with both hands - believe me you will not regret it. Watching Jonathan persuade 3 models to climb into the refrigerator of a morgue for his final shot had to be seen - that was after he had them sprawled all over "the slab" of the morgue and even in a Playboy Bunny costume.

I've only just got in as i came home via a family trip to Ipswich and am now only downloading my pictures. Sunday will see me posting some as i'm now off to bed!

Once again, thanks for organising a great day out Jonathan.

Glad you enjoyed it.  It was pretty cool ;)

But I don't remember persuading anybody to climb into a freezer.  Oh no, hang on a minute.  It's all coming back to me now....

A clear example of why one of us earns a living taking photographs and the other doesn't
Now starting to go through them in earnest - won't find any as good as that... :'(

Whilst i think both of you would have enjoyed it i think Eileen would have gained the most from it based on her portrait portfolio and interest in flash lighting.
With a sufficient supply of make up assistants and models - you could easily do a 9 til 5 session at that place and still run out of time. (and memory cards )
It's easier to press the button than have to contort your body and facial expressions on queue - on top of which some of the places left the models very cold.
I think i bumped into Jonathan just 3 times all session - at the beginning, during a model swap and in the morgue.

It was so interesting to see how the different models worked in different situations, the various lighting 'rigs' being used by various photographers and even the the effect of the make up girls on a models appearance.
Seeing how Jonathan 'created' his morgue refrigerator shot was a video tutorial in itself. It's easy to see how people 'get drawn into' helping to create a shot.
I suspect once the scene was set a few others got 'their' shot as well.
It was that type of day, or if that is business as usual i can see why people enjoy doing that line of work.
As i said earlier - once you've done a shoot like this - you can find yourself getting hooked...
