Are we therefore meant to be taking a shot of a famous / well known piece of art Irv ?  :-\ I do not have a long enough lens to catch a shot of the Eiffel tower from here  :'( :2funny:

Well you best get saving then Mark :2funny: :2funny:!
The idea  I was trying to convey - although not very well obviously - is for you to shoot something that is a copy of a piece of art (ie a woman sitting and giving the Mona Lisa smile , someone standing on a hill as the Angel of the north statue, maybe the Blackpool tower with a beret in the foreground or even Van Gogh's sunflowers) but with your interpretation of it. I hope this helps rather than confuses the issue more!

I've got the picture now, thank you; with a few ideas springing to mind already. Splendid topic choice  My fault for being so dense in the head  :-[

Irv, you having problems uploading to the site?   ???
Title: Re: Chat thread for weekly comp ART

Here we go then:

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10146/normal_Entry_Av2_DCIM_0007_flickr.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=11494&fullsize=1)

You can start guessing now.

Irv, are we allowed to give any clues if the guesses are miles out?

I've got a bit enthused by this one, so I am planning to spend another hour or so trying to replicate some other works and see which one I like best by the end of the week.

Not uploading Mick it is just that the Bbcode was missing from the last set of pictures that I put in the gallery but it seems that it is there now.

Over the top processing and a little fun playing

That's a tricky one Andy - there are loads of images of ballet shoes . .  is this from a photograph or a painting?

It is an interpretation (not a replica) hopefully capturing the spirit of the artist's work in his hay day, and I feel sure he would have enjoyed the ease in digital camera processing.

This one is a tribute to my Ma who hung up her ballet shoes many moons ago

I took so many photos this last week during my UK trip, but this may have to be my comp entry.
His hands are in the wrong place but otherwise it did remind me of a much older sculpture.

I'm guessing yours might the thinker Carol.

Andy, you gave yours away on flickr  :o

Got another one I did this afternoon:

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10146/normal_HWK53630-2_copy_flickr.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=11507&fullsize=1)

. . from a photographer I found inspirational and everyone else found a PITA. Thanks to Mrs H for being a brilliant sport and posing for me.

Go on someone, have a guess at the others I've done  :knuppel2:

From the 1880s:

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10146/normal_Boots-HWK53644_copyb_flickr.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=11497&fullsize=1)

From the 1920s:

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10146/normal_Entry_Av2_DCIM_0007_flickr.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=11494&fullsize=1)

the last two both paintings.

Got one more idea to try, but think I'll go with the 1920s image as my entry.

I thought mine was a dead give away Howard,  going on how quickly my daughter mentioned the title and artist of the original painting. That said, I have seen another ballet shoes painting by the same artist in a private collection that is far away much better than the popular printed version I lamely interpreted.

I would need a clue to guess your shots as I am not familiar with the images portrayed.

The boots one looks to tidy for Van Gogh and I hazard a guess the other is about pillow sacks conversing although the pallet ought to give me a clue  :-\

Yepp, Howard. Hole in one, Mr- Rodin's sculpture it is. Although it could have been one of the three monkies who don't see, hear or speak any evil. Not sure if they're works of art though.

As for yours - I have absolutely no idea. Just shows what an ignoramus I am  :o

A brief search and I found a similar image for your 'Lovers' Howard   ;D

OOh and just spotted 'Shoes'- Vincent Van Gogh - one of his I had not come across before

I didn't know the Warhol one; after a few minutes on the web I was convinced you were doing Intermission by Mahoney.  :uglystupid2:

Vincent is dead right for the boots, although his painting (one of many on the subject) was of shoes*. And so is your identification of a certain Belgian gentleman as the artist behind the Lovers. And the other one I am mucking about with at the moment too . .

The photograph is by a chap who's later work degenerated into near pornography. But there was a lot of other things he did well. He committed suicide in 2006.

*oops, crossed with your edit.

Just googled Mahoney as I am not familiar with his work Howard.

Interesting how so many artists appear to redo or reinterpret subject matter sharing their own emotions, opinions and feelings through the images. Inevitable I suppose as there is not much that is new under the sun to discover.

For me the images and paintings always take on a bit more when I learn more about an artist's life, that then helps to determine the 'originality bit' on view.

Hi folks, not been around for a while but this comp caught my eye when I saw one of Howard's shots over on flickr.

Anyway here's mine.  How do you post a small version of the image?

Aha!  I think I've guessed the beans.

Crikey, this was difficult.  First of all, I realised how pitiful my knowledge of paintings is and secondly, trying to recreate them was really tough, so I opted for something obvious in the end.

A couple more to guess

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10312/normal_cc2012_alt.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=11516&fullsize=1)

I think the second one might be the same as Oggalily's but on the other hand ...

OK, some guesses before toast and marmalade:

Del's here:
1. Something by Edvard Munch - one of his 'scream' series?
2. no idea

Ogga's entry: Can't get this one either. It's not image I recognise.

Mike's entry: a retake of Warhol's Campbell's soup can?

Del's entry: pop art in general. Warhol in particular?

Oldboy's entry: Ophelia by Millais, but the wrong way around?   :legit:

Del's entry is the Marilyn Munroe painting from Warhol, I think it was her ...

My photograph is of a sculpture by Plensa http://jaumeplensa.com/
I was in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park last Tuesday with Paul - he has similar photos in his gallery too. I hope I didn't pinch your idea Paul!

Ogga's photo looks like one Paul took of himself a while ago, but I'm sure that's not the work of art he's referring to ...

I'll give you a hint.  It's a by-the-numbers ripoff of a photo; the photographer is reasonably well-known but everyone will know who the sitter is. And it's not jinky!

Bowie, Warhol, Bailey or Abers - The tog obviously has a good eye for Composition - but I'm very much in the dark re togs - It has a Humph Bogart / James Cagney feel so perhaps there is a bit of imagination at play here as well :legit:

Is it a self portrait by the artist Ogga ?  :-\

The sitter in mine is Spanish and the shooter is American. Probably late '50s or thereabouts.

The subject smoked but it wasn't his defining characteristic.

Ogga - Picasso, Irving Penn.

Took a fair bit of looking, would never have got it without the clues.
