Vignetting yes or no??

The use of dark vignetting on pictures seems to be taking an increase of late, probably because of the ease in which Lightroom allows you to create a vignette. Am I the only one who thinks it is vastly overused and normally used to hide the fact that a picture lacks composition and or impact? Is it just me? What do you think?
BTW Apologies for a long absence. I have started a photography club and am in the process of setting up a wedding/studio/gallery shop in town. Been busy.
