Oldboy

I don't know what you guys and girls do, but it's young people who ask me to take their picture.

Same here, but only teenagers in groups. Never had a single teen approach me and ask for a picture.
It's mostly the boys who ask; but the girls go along with it most of the time.

I've had girls and boys ask me to take their photos, but not one of them has asked to see the result or where they can view the photo.  ???

Low energy lightbulbs. Last evening yet another one failed after half the running time of the incandescent bulb it replaced. Luckily I had a spare incandescent bulb to temporarily replace it. The difference was amazing - so much brighter, so much warmer, and, if the eco fascists hadn't banned them, so much cheaper. So now I've got to spend a heap of cash on another dull short lived piece of cr*p so I can just about see in the dark again.

It`s nothing I do Oldboy. of course I have far more young people asking me to take their photos too whether drunk or sober. Just saying that the only times I have been challenged have been boys in groups eager to show their mettle / bravado.

Again, same here. Sometimes they ask if they'll be on facebok (not), but if not, they lose interest.

We went though the same frustrations around Christmas. As I remembered reading somewhere, that builders' merchants still (legally) sold incandescent bulbs for use in workplaces etc, I trailed to Wickes (the only place I knew that could possibly pass for a builders' merchant), only to find they had a very depleted stock of the low energy lamps. In the cold and pouring rain I trailed back home.
I did find websites selling incandescent bulbs though, but never did anything about it, so cannot recommend anything.

ABERS

Lucky enough to find an ancient lighting shop finally going under and having a liquidation sale. Went in and bought three dozen of the 60 and 100 watt bulbs he had. I think it equated to about 4 or five of those stupid dim 1 candle power gizmos that take an hour to get anywhere near usable as far as seeing anything is concerned. Set up for at least another four or five years, or even longer.

Here, they've been selling 240V halogen bulbs encased in a traditional incandescent type bulb. It switches on quickly, is bright, uses less energy, lasts about the same time and can be dimmed.
For example:

We've got those here too Hugh, but they are only low wattage versions, up to about 75w equivalent. I've got a couple in my study. Unfortunately the living room has an old fashioned single lamp fitting that requires a 150w bulb to be able to see reasonably well. I use a 23w compact spiral ecodim in there. Got the replacement this morning, cost nearly €10. But on the bright side (pun intended) the shop had a second mark down in the sales and I got a rather nice fleece jacket for €26. So that makes up for a it a bit ;)

LED lighting is probably the future, but currently way too expensive and still not really bright enough.

Phillips just introduced new LED lights.  They are as bright and they got around the need for a large heat sink that has plagued LEDs to this point.

If these are the ones they had on a special display in the supermarket a few weeks ago they are only as bright as some equivalent lower wattage incandescent bulbs, and I don't have sufficient remaining internal organs to sell in order to afford them.

I cannot find the story I saw.  They are different looking, round but flat.  I did not think they had a 100W equiv yet, but it was coming and they would fit more fixtures without the heat sink.

I have switched almost all of my lights to CFL or LED.  I do have halogen lights in the ceiling.  I am happy with the light from the ones I have.  You do need to be careful on what you buy for areas where light is important.  In my garage I use whatever.  All of my CFLs, are quick on.

I think we are talking about the same ones. The prices here are horrific.

We have a mix of types of light too, mostly Cfl, some halogen and one remaining LED. My main issues with these new types of lighting are the lack of lumens and their appallingly short longevity, especially the latter. I replaced half of the halogens in the kitchen with so called long life LEDs. The first one failed within 6 months, the others shortly afterwards. Given that they were three times the price of the bulbs they replaced (all of which had lasted more than 5 years) as well as dimmer, they didn't get renewed. Cfls last a fraction of the time that incandescent bulbs did, and require specialist disposal. Overall a FAIL!

All of my CFLs and LEDs have lasted a long time.  The halogens need replacing more than anything else.

The 'soon to be released' Fuji XT-1

When i moved to the X-Pro 1 and 35mm lens as a simple way to get my tog mojo going, i had intended no hurry to upgrade the body for quite a while because it met my brief.

But the XT-1 offers those sensible additions that make it a good upgrade, like weather sealing (a real "+" if most of your photography is taken outside), dual memory card slots and a nice BG which offers improved portrait functionality.

The new camera will not make me a better photogrpaher, but it could save a shoot being ruined due to weather such as Chinese New Year Celebrations a few years back when my 5D2 shut down due to rain interference. This was just after 9am and I'd been up since 6am and still had a whole day planned  >:( I've always been a fan of dual memory cards - if a picture is worth capturing, it is worth providing some redundancy on the memory card scenario (but i think that's the I.T. person in me talking). The other 'benefit' (not need) would be the 8fps over 3 with improved tracking which would allow me to get some acceptable pics of my granddaughter playing tennis in tournaments. A 9 year old on a tennis court is not as easy to follow is most would think! :-[
1 body, 1 lens, 1 flash gun, 1 tripod, 1 cable release & 1 filter. Keeping it simple!
(I lied, just got a second lens!)
