Why is Nikon equipment so fragile

   Because it's junk!.....But it's cheap junk, thats why folks like Oldboy and myself use it!
   That chap did'nt seem overly botherd though.

Its probable that all brands of pro cameras would have suffered the same kind of damage, weatherproofed is one thing but i have not seen an indestructible model from any manufacturer.
The owner was not bothered the slightest, just an insurance claim to him.

OMG! And to think that I almost cried cause I paid $250US for my camera...and it doesn't accept external lenses! LOL
