It's jolly clever isn't it?

Essentially it seems to take a giant focus stack of every shot. I wonder what speed it can work at? What resolution can it manage?

Will make iPhone X even more expensive and irritating to the power of n.

Pretty much what I thunk...Focus stacking and some fancy in camera software.

the potentials are great- but i'm guessing the big boys are already sitting with it in their armoury.

As the article points out - this has been sitting about for a long time, and if it was such a great deal, the big boys would have released it sooner...
Or paid enough dosh to keep it off the market.

I'm not against it - i can see the benefits - but i think it will require careful use to maximise its potential...

I don't think it's using a focus stack in the traditional sense (multiple images taken with varying focal planes as you would with a traditional camera that captures the light as it hits a planar surface within the camera). With this they're also trying to capture (for each pixel) the distribution of where this light came from. With this information they can virtually move the focal plane along the optical axis by only sampling light that arrive at the pixel from specific directions.

From the examples you can see that for objects that focus a distance (in front/behind) from the focal plane are not rebuilt as crystal clear as the objects that were the subject of the camera's optical focus.

ABERS

So it will revolutionise the way we take our pictures, will it make them any better? ::)

I thought it was maybe 1st April when I read this. I presume you would require something other than PS to edit the files. I don't think that at this time its something I would buy but it is interesting.
Hi, "Guest" long time no see, how are you

oh Alan, you just love to load the gun and let some one else pull the trigger  ;)

you know as well as i do that the definition of a 'good' or 'better' picture is open to debate. Loads of debate - in fact there is one such debate currently being discussed on Twitter - time to go have my two penneth worth  :D
