does anyone use a filter on their lens?
i mainly ask because of protection for the lens, or does it have an effect on close ups?

Never use a filter with any of my lenses anyway. With macro it could degrade the image as you only have a small DOF to work with. I have used a couple of close-up filters with the Nikon 60mm F2.8 marco which didn't effect the photo.  ;D
