trouble is - it's taking place over a weekend and engineering works is always a possibility.
Maybe this is route B due to engineering works.

Even us, as staff, do not get to hear about things until much closer the time.

I appreciate it is annoying, but it seems to be the way of doing business nowadays - just shut the line completely instead of running SLW over the route.
the cost of operating route B will be much higher than the original route A - i suspect that Network Rail are having to compensate them a bit for that little inconvenience!

Yep thanks for the info, And yes it was a Saturday you would have thought that they would have sorted things out when they drew up there original plans ;)

Ian, some info for reference.

Operators have to draw up these plans for up to (and occasionally over) a year in advance. Network Rail engineering works are planned well over a year in advance but are subject to cancellation or deferment if some thing more important comes to light (derailment or similar catastrophe - NR suffers about 1 a month) which needs the budget.

As a result, without going into details, Train Operators do not often receive such info until a fortnight before hand and we as train crews often do not know until a few days before.
I would be prepared for quite a bit of alterations with all the additional electrifcation planned for the North West. These are not short term projects and really do involve quite a lot of work.

The logisitics of running a railway as intensive as in the UK often leaves me wondering how we ever achieve half of what we do - and i've had some 25+ years experience of it.
Take it from me when i  say NR and the TOC's do not want to alter things at any time, let alone at 'short notice'.
The costs can sometimes be prohibitive making it cheaper to just cancel a train and pay the fine for doing so!

I do fully appreciate your views (as does Jim) but sadly we do see the other side of the coin as well through our work.
