Looks like my internal wireless card has gone TU. on me lappy
I get an error telling me the router is not broadcasting yet I know it is as I can connect using the works lappy.

Anyone had experience of removing and replacing a wireless card in a lappy?
or Is there a plug and play alternative ?

You can get a USB wireless adapter for a few tens of pounds (£20? £25?).

I'd recommend disabling the original wireless card in the laptop first (my computer->properties->hardware->device manager->Network adapters, select the correct adapter and then select the disable option.

Before you do anything, on the laptop select start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Device Management, From the dropdown list click on the line for Modems and select your modem then right click, and from the dropdown list select uninstall. After doing this reboot your laptop and your modem should work OK. I think it's possible a conflict between it and something else.  ;D

My router is not listed there.  A spekerphone modem is though
Let me explain my set up
bt router upstairs connected to desktop pc via ethernet
lappy x 2 downstairs connected via wireless
the one not connected uses a atheros card or can use windows to connect. Neither will.
the other lappy (works one) does connect via wireless via a dell card

Alf,

Before you go spending any money, turn off the power to the BT router for at least 30 seconds and switch it back on, if that doesn't sort it, hit the reset button on the router, press and hold until the router re-boots. You might then need to go into the manage wireless connections thingy in Windows and tell it to repair the connection. We have 2 BT routers at home and regularly get this sort of rubbish, for some reason the BT routers seem to like a bit of shock treatment every now and then just to keep themselves honest. Has to be worth a go.

Cheers, Peter.

Thanks Peter but I have tried all them. and did a factory reset
I think the lappy card must be u/s as the thing still connects to this lappy

Have you tried kicking the router around the garden in total disgust for around an hour or so, this can sometimes work, failing that then substitute the offending laptop, might not solve the problem but can be good for the soul.

I have a shelf full of PCMCIA wireless cards, you're welcome to one of them as a replacement if you have the slot as built in cards are usually on the motherboard.

Cheers, Peter.

It should still be listed in Device Management and you need to uninstall it as outlined above and reboot. My guess is the driver has become corrupted and by uninstalling the driver, Windows will reinstalled it.  ;D

Is this the same slot as a express card slot on the side (54mm) ?

Hi Alf,

It's not the modem that needs deinstalling/reinstalling, it would be the device drivers for the wireless adapters on the laptop. Try deleting them, and then rebooting/reinstalling them. This is what I believe OB was meaning to say.

There is always the USB option for an additional wireless adapter on a PC. For example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WG111-Wireless-54Mbps-Adapter/dp/B0002LHX8O (not particularly recommending this one, just an example of what's available and prices if it comes to new hardware).

By selecting the device in device manager and clicking uninstall it's the driver that is uninstalled not the physical device. I didn't say that in so many words as it might confuse someone, but did add it in a later post.

No, it's a thin slot on the side of the laptop call PCMCIA. Some newish laptops don't have the slot as they use the Express Card one instead.
