I do do quite a lot in manual with the Tamron, but I've never had that happen to me. Be interested to see what the other users say.

I'm think this might be why the original owner sold it. Otherwise it's excellent lens, really sharp and other than these little shocks easy to work with. I think next time I'm out with it, I'll have to pay more attention to what might trigger it. Yesterday it went through a time where it did it about every 10 mins, then it settled down and it only did it every hour or so.

No issues with mine, always in manual & never done this although I do find if i take the weight of camera & lens while holding the focus ring it pops back to auto sometimes.

No such issues with mine either.

Sounds like a dodgy clutch mechanism to me.  Like the push pull was stuck half way between manual and auto.  ???

Are you saying the actual focus ring started moving in your hand?

That sounds plausible, though it doesn't look halfway, I mean it's definitely either on the M line or on the AF line, I've just tried to put it half way and it won't stay that way. Of course that doesn't explain whats going on under the focus ring.

Oh yes the ring doesn't just start moving it does however many rotations it needs to get back to the infinity setting.  And here I've been thinking it's my mother's ghost.  :) It's startling when it happens believe me.

I have an AF70-300 LD di ma ro Tamron. It's ok but I realy like my Sigma  APO DG macro 70-300

You may find the 'Scale Ring' has packed up. My APO lens did this . The motor worked ok but the lens would not extend. Cost £80 to get it sorted out .
I had mine repaired as the APO is about £245 new

Hope thi helps

On the whole, I do like my sigma lenses better, but at the time I bought this it was getting really good reviews. I've been playing with it and a Minolta lens. Had the Minolta on my film camera so I switched them. What I've noticed is when I turn the Sony on it automatically retracts the lens if it's extended. I also noticed that the issue with the Tamron occurred when I did things like turn the camera from landscape to portrait and if I switched settings on the MSAP dial. I'm starting to think there's a short at the mount. A bad connection.

spent the last 40 mins in the garden playing with this lens, a minolta 70-300 and my Sony 350 and Minolta Maxxum. There is definitely an issue between the Sony and the Tamron. The 70-300 worked fine on the Sony and the Tamron worked fine on the Maxxum. Wish I still had my KM 5D to test it out with the Tamron.

No question, now that I've swapped it around between the sony and the minolta film and paid close attention I can hear something turning on and off at the time it does this resetting thing. I'm pretty sure it's the connection at the mount. Have to wait a bit til I've got spare cash.  :(

You'll have to tell me where you get your Tamron lenses at 30% of list price - I'd rather like a 70-200 ;)

I've got an SP90  too, and I rather like it.
