Title: CHAT Thread for the weekly competition 'DOWN MY WAY,' from 23 till 29 Sept 2013
Post by: Reinardina on September 21, 2013, 09:50:21 AM
CHAT thread for the 'Down my Way' weekly competition, from 23 September till 29 September.

With Jinky away on holiday, I act as his stand in.

The theme Jinky chose for this week's competition is  "Down my Way," just a shot of your local surroundings / location, with no restrictions on pp.

Pictures to be taken between 00.01am Monday 23rd September to 23:59pm Sunday 29th September 2013.

Pictures to be posted in the entries thread no later than 23.59pm Monday 30th September 2013.
Poll will be up Tuesday 1st October.

Winner to be announced Saturday 5th October

The Rules for the weekly competition are:-

By entering you agree to take responsibility to
post a topic on the Sunday following your declared win
create an entries thread
create a chat thread
create a poll for that weeks comp and declare the winner on the Saturday
(if for any reason there is a problem and no subject is posted by the winner by Monday night admin will advise second place winner to post the topic asap, do the poll etc)

In case of a tie, the first entry posted wins.

I think Franklin Engelmann is dust now and it was called 'Down Your Way'.  :o

I had to google him, as he was a bit before my time. In England.

That was indeed 'Down Your Way,' but we are now asked to go 'Down My Way.'
But, to save us any problems (not sure I could accommodate all of you 'down my way'), he stipulates a 'shot  of your local surroundings.'

This topic would have been right up my street as they say, although I usually think of home as "up here". Sadly I anticipate being far too overloaded with other work next week, and probably for the following two or three as well. I expect it'll attract a large entry though. Nice one.

Thanks for doing the honours for me Reinardina and thanks for all those votes. Currently 3.30 am where I am and cannot sleep with prospect of a 5am game drive in search of a black rhino. On a game reserve in Addo Elephant Park and have so many shots of lions, kudu, elephants, penguins and the like I should be able to come up with an exotic down my way shot if time to post when I get back Sunday. Great fun!

Not a single entry yet!

I took some on Friday and yesterday, haven't quite made up my mind, which one to enter; narrowed it down to three.
It won't be a chocolate box image, even though I also took some nice ones in that genre.

Nor a Picture Postcard one?

Been out taking some images that I've been meaning to take for ages, before the light gets too low in the sky, but none that fits the brief, so no entry from me this week.

Nothing from me either - too busy and no right lighting on the odd occasion I have been able to get out and about for a few minutes.

Maybe a corporate picture post card.
It was taken in my locality, but it is not typical of my locality, so I may be stretching the boundaries a bit. And to be honest, it is not one that will attract a lot of votes! I'm sure one of the other three would fare better, but hey ho, winning isn't everything.

The weather is rather bland up here, so not a good day for photos, suppose it's the same down your way.
But can't you somehow 'unbland' them?

I have quite a few shots that would do, one of which is this one:

Vintage Southampton

But I decided to be different, and am prepared to go with nul points, just for the sheer hell of it.

I have just entered this:

Well, that's two no votes entries then!

Creative writing Reinardina bit like the editing, don't actually think much of my entry but it adds numbers.

I had a little bit of play on words with mine. Rather than Down My Way, I have gone with Down My Causeway, as I was away in Northumberland and over the weekend, this was 'Down My Way. The tidal times were perfect for the Holy Island crossing, the causeway was clear to drive across for both sunset (my images were pants) and sunrise (my images were much better). So I have entered with this one, which are the upturned boats used as sheds by the fisherman . The sunrise colours are a perfect backdrop for the boats. I used 2 images, one exposed for the sky and one for the sheds. Hope you like it.

Thanks Abers. There's not much else there apart from the castle and priory! I passed over the chance of an amazing heron shot when I was driving over the causeway as I was going to miss the red sky. He was gone when I did the return journey. Glad I didn't stop though or I wouldn't have got that photo.  I know the boat sheds are a bit of a Holy Island cliche but they have to be done!

Still processing shots so grabbed one that made biggest impression on me. As we drove into the bush a young bull came crashing through the trees to try to see us off. Quite scarey! Ranger refused to back off saying he had to stand ground or it would challenge every truck on the game reserve. As he predicted it soon backed down but came within 4 yards of us!

Since the brief seems to be much wider than originally proposed, I was going to post a picture of a bramble that got in my way when out blackberrying last week, but decided to go with a PYO farm some couple of miles from home.

Not sure how much wider the original brief could be to break Alan. It was intended to be any shot, processed any way you like of anywhere you were and whatever was around you - so basically anything goes. Your bramble in the way would have been as valid as your tunnel shot if it is where you were. If it wasn`t clear then my fault for not being around to advise any queries but really was meant to be a catch all theme and thus all entries meet the theme as I envisaged as they were taken where people were.

In my very early stages of photography, on the old Photo Radar website, I took an image for the weekend comp 'Something You Can PickUp'. Some of you guys who used to be on PR may remember it. My friend dressed up as a 'lady of the night' and I took an image in the lane behind my house. There was a street lamp casting an eerie yellow glow. I parked my car in the lane. wound the window down and left the lights on. My friend leaned in window and it looked like she was about to be 'picked up'. I came second but people said I would have won if it had been more on theme. They didn't think a prostitute was something to be picked up.... The reason I'm saying this is because it's the voter who decides if am image is on theme not the one who sets the theme.

I'm also telling you because  the photo was taken down my way (this weeks theme), the back lane, however  a few people asked where it was taken as it looked very seedy!!!

Hmmm ... I have never ever taken a shot in/of a place where I wasn't physically present.

It does make for a very varied 'harvest,' but very difficult to judge.

I must live on a different planet. To me "Down My Way" just means something local to me where I am. It is a wide brief and I suppose on that basis it does make it difficult to compare - much like Alan`s best in show week when the field was equally wide and varied.
Ah well - the voters will decide as per DD post I guess.
I had not expected to win / set theme whilst away it was a last minute message to Reinardina who kindly put it up for me. Maybe we need to get very specific with themes -though they are always open to wide interpretation I find by title with a little  imagination. Only stating techniques / equipment to be used puts on limits eg macros, best wide angles etc.

Sorry if the wide brief caused confusion.

Er - yes well obviously you`d have to be there to take the shot!  ;) I meant it doesn`t mean your home town / area - just your location and whatever  you come across at any time during the week. Of course if anyone had raised a question prior to submissions I could have clarified on the points when I had access to wi fi on my travels rather than us debate meaning after the poll is up! I`d suggest if anyone is left unclear about any brief they enquire when set. Many times I`ve posted an entry way off beam from what the theme setter probably envisaged - sometimes those shots have even got votes and won - other times they have crashed an burned!

Oops just to confuse even more after reading the thread and rushing it in between trying to start making up an album of images from my SA trip  I`ve accidentally called the poll Down YOUR Way instead of my way! I`ll ask an admin to change it to save further confusion  :D

Does it all matter?

When I set 'The Best In Show' I was trying to get away from a set theme, which I think inhibits people from entering, I know it makes me a bit reluctant, and on that occasion there was a double figure entry.

I would hazard a guess that if each week the theme was left open more entries would follow. Something like 'Your Pic Of The Week'. Not difficult to judge, a stonking picture is just that, a stonking picture.

The image of the week as appears on the Home Page wouldn't be affected, that's just one person's view of what makes a good picture.

Just a thought.

Of course it does not really matter. It just goes to show how differently people read language. For me it meant my own locality, but of course it can be equally well be interpreted as 'wherever you are.'

I deliberately entered a different shot from my local High Street, but never expected to come across raging bulls!

It does make a good show though; catering to all tastes.

For me I prefer a specific theme - if I am ho0nest more challenging than the wide one I set this last week to get my brain working. Given how few images I upload here and elsewhere nowadays I probably would not bother with my best of the week- some weeks I might not even have picked up my camera and my vote often goes on interpretation of the theme as well as the technical aspects of the shot. I think your open week was good timing Abers when we got some new members too. I recall the Time theme set the week before when we got into double figures too befoire entry levels went down again after those 2/3 weeks.

As long as there's a theme, does it really matter how broad or narrow it is? At least entries are up this week.

TBH I was not going to enter this week as Reinardina knows, some themes fit what you like to take pictures of and some don't. I only put my shot in because at that time there were only 3 entries and I just made up numbers.

I know that it was a Nil point entry and normally would not bother, in fact I think in future if I am not happy with an entry then I will not bother, think you should always put up your best shot on a topic.

As for briefs and entries some do leave a lot to be thought about and IF, as mentioned you are unsure then you should ask the question.

Think that Chris said in a previous post in this thread " it's the voter who decides if am image is on theme not the one who sets the theme" sorry but the theme setter has as much right as the voter to say if something is on theme and maybe at the time an entry is placed the theme setter could mention that a certain picture does not meet his brief, possibly.

Well that's my take on this matter for what it's worth.

My question there would be, if the theme setter didn't think an entry fit the brief, would he not allow the image to be entered? If he would allow it to be entered, what happens if it wins? That's why I was suggesting it was the voter who ultimately decided.

Congratulations Chris. Well deserved.

I can shed a bit of light on your voters. I was the first to vote, and my vote went to your shot, so for a short time you had 100% of the votes.

I like anonymous polls, as you don't run the risk that people feel obliged to vote for certain persons. For whatever reasons.

I want to thank whoever voted for my urban entry. I knew it wouldn't do well, but I'm behind it for the full 100 percent!

Nice one DD - got my vote. I like anonymous voting too but usually say where mine went afterwards. I think it`s best if votes don`t show the running order until you have voted too or you might  be inclined to vote for one of the 2 front runners to help decide it rather than the one you really like. Anyway it all comes out in the wash and doesn`t matter who voted for what and yes for me the voter always decides if an image fits the brief and setter cannot control entries. That said sometimes I think people don`t always look at the brief in voting and I am sure many don`t look at the larger size prior to voting or all the comp entries would have more views than they have.

Anyway - well done.

I know people don't always consider the brief when voting. But ideally, everyone should have a look at the larger picture, before deciding which one to vote for.

Maybe this should be emphasized when setting the poll?

Well done Chris, I imagine you have a few more gems from your trip.

Super colours and detail with the long exposure although the Chromatic Aberration caught my eye and my vote went to KFC .

And thank you to who ever voted on my effort

Are you referring to the boat on the right or tha casstle bottom left (or both)? Im not sure it is chromatic abberation (never had that before with the lens I used), I think it was my poor post processing. I had 2 images, one exposed for the sky and one for the boats. I have never replaced part of an image before and it was the magnetic lasso tool I used that caused the abberation (I think).

I was refering to both the left and right fringing effects.

Interestingly, following your post on HDR I played around with blending two adapted exposures of a single shot using the HDR tool and liked the effect, thank you.
