@oldboy: the limit is only if you want a CD version. Most in the western world can download it and burn their own image.

I installed it on a bootable USB stick the other day. Works quite nicely on the laptop, but there is a question of the learning curve - it's different to use from Windows and will take time to get used to it. Then there's the matter of migrating email, the apps you enjoy the most, etc.

I'm already on it. Launches tomorrow, but I'll wait a few days as the servers are bound to be busy. Most of my favourite apps run on it anyway, Opera, Picasa, Open Office. But for those that don't there is always Virtual Box or Crossover (although the latter does cost $20).

Hugh did you install the release candidate of 9.10 or are you using the previous release?

I used the ISO image 9.04. Instructions that I followed are here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubuntu-904-persistent-install-windows/

Then I had to go and install the gfortran compilers (and work out how to do that). For someone with a bit of computing nouse, it isn't terribly difficult, however, most people would probably do well to have it pre-installed or have someone do it for them.

I haven't tried the wine option yet....Unfortunately work requires some arcane apps like locust notes for email, etc. And for those used to Excel, OpenOffice Calc isn't quite the same. It's a matter of re-learning quite a bit.

I'm running 9.04 on a machine it's great for getting a bit more juice out of an older machine. However I tried to install it on a purpose built machine with a 500 meg HD and it wouldn't work. So it's not fool proof. And while I tried to get answers and help from the alleged Linux guru's they couldn't explain why it wouldn't work, almost as if they couldn't admit it would have issues. Proof it wasn't the machine, some nice chap steered me to another Linux version that loaded up without issue.

That said I will be downloading 9.10 or trying to, tomorrow and give it a shot.

I've just downloaded it now, took a wee bit longer than usual but otherwise no apparent issues. I'm burning the ISO as we speak and will be trying the install withing the hour.

Hmm... it seems I've succumbed to a known bug. There's lots of problems with the sound server on Ubuntu 9.10, and my setup just doesn't want to behave.

Time to download 9.04, I think.

I'm happy I stuck with 9.04 now. Think I might stick the 9.10 CD through the shredder and wait for the fixed upgrade.
