lol.  Good idea   but I'm bound to bugger things up, so I'll leave the system alone while it's working.  :D

We'd have had about five hundred members if we kept all the spammers that registered.   :legit:

yeah - they are a nuisance.
They've cost me 2 domains which have to sit on hold now - domains i've had for about 10 years and much sort after.
One day i'll get to use them again when i can afford a decent serve to run from home with my own filters on.

Andrew, the NAS drive I have (Qnap) can be a web server - amongst many other things - and are relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for that Mark.
I have looked at the Qnap drives cos they seem to get a mention on here often enough.
I've also conidered getting them as a data port that i can send to from other places.

On DPG we have about 10-15 potential spammers a day trying to join.  :spam: They rarely get by our highly sophisticated anti-spam system. Sounfds like its the same as yours Mick.

I have to say - i find this all re-assuring how members are checked out for spamming habits etc.
Hopefully others will feel re-assured also and impressed by the extra efforts Mick goes to with this site over some other sites.

Sorry Mick, It might be best if I leave approvals to you. I had no idea it looked genuine to me when I checked my e.mail....... :-[

Out of pure interest - what constitutes a spammer, how is one recognised as such and how does one end up on the spam website list?  :spam:  :2funny:
Canon 7D,  Canon SX1 IS, EF100 f/2.8 USM Macro, EF70-200 f/4 L IS USM, EF17-40 f/4 L USM, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, Canon Speedlite 580EX MkII

In my experience there are several ways of spotting a potential spammer - one way is to look at the list as Mick noted, the other way is the email address. They often just look wrong!

As for getting onto the lists in the first place, I guess its reports from various forums of unsuitable postings. Often with links to porn sites.

Another trick is to check the e-mail address properties.
Don't know how you do it on a MAc yet, but on Windows you riht click the e-mail address and select properties - and the address shown is totally different from the one you view on the e-mail.
Or - as can just as easily happen - the e-mail has been sent by you to you!

Reverse DNS is the best way of checking - what this does in simple terms is to tell you which name server the e-mail comes from. If that is different from where the domain name is being hosted - it's spam.
Most modern mail servers operate a reverse DNS system by default and is how many companies stop being bombarded by loads of spam.

Its not just the spammers that have had the boot. The dcm resident troll and gobshite tried to join using a couple of his aliases, we kicked him into touch as "undesirable" ;D :2funny:
