Title: IOTW Year End
Post by: skellum on December 19, 2011, 07:41:17 PM
Well its my turn to pick IOTW for next week and as its the last week of the year I have had an idea  On the lines of Greypoints idea 'Best of 2010' .Submit one of your favorites here with a brief discription and I will set up a poll on Friday to end on Christmas Day ( Sunday ). The winner will then take IOTW into the new year.

Hope everyone likes the idea and I hope Greypoint will excuse me for hijacking her idea. If anyone is not happy with this let me know.   :legit:

Idea update........  Why not nominate another members picture if you do not wish to enter yourself. Just let me know which one and I will enter it.

Either sounds a good idea but will wait to get a consensus from others.

How about putting in 1 personal favorite plus 1 nominated favorite from another's album

Quite like this idea too.  What about adding a bit of incentive?  I still have a copy of PhotoPlus X4 to give away, and it would save me having to set up a separate comp.  ;)

Ok  So a few of you think its a good idea including Mick importantly so I think I should get on setting it up with its own entry thread in the Competitions. I will keep this one as the chat tread.  So it will be open to nominated and personal entries.  Please have them submitted by Friday when I will set up the poll. Winner to receive the Serif editing program from Mick.

I know there is a place somewhere on the site with previous images of the week, but I cannot find it immediately. I have a vague recollection that my submission may already have graced the top spot. If so, let me know and I'll find another picture. (Probably of the same person.)

I must admit, I haven't seen every picture in every gallery, but my all time favourite is Andy's little girl, so I'd like to nominate her.

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11049/normal_Littlelight.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=10439&fullsize=1)

As far as one of my own pictures is concerned ... where to start? I always think the last one is the best one, and only after some time has elapsed, do I realise how wrong I was.
So I'll have a think and a rummage through old(er) stuff.

Mick!

Probaly not the right place, but several times I have had the following error message when changing pages, or when I wanted to use the spell checker.

Going to the previous poage proved no problem, so in the end I could do what I wanted to do, but it is annoying.

And yes Mick, that was the link I needed! Thanks. At first glance 'little girl' wasn't there, so I should be all right.

Dave, I realised that, and actually thought it should not be a previous IOTW, that's why I wanted to make sure!

While it may be seen as repaying the complement I would like to nominate this one from Reinardina.

(http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11140/normal_P1210599_The_Lone_Walker_resized.jpg) (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=9665)

I particularly like the composition using the trees to frame the shot, while the camera perspective, misty avenue in the penetrating light carry the eye into the depth of the shot, with the choice in mono tone adding an edgy feel to a sense of mystery in the image.

Another of my fog/mist shots. Very appropriate at this time of year and one of my enduring favourites.

May I add this one for myself?

Absolutely not, in fact this is normally discouraged.   Also wouldn't be fair to new members, or members who haven't had a IOTW previously.  So I'm guessing this comp includes any image in the gallery, (previous winner or not)

So basically anyone who has a image in the gallery will have a chance to win.

Not easy to choose just one. I've been through the galleries for the last year and have been particularly struck by these. So, can I propose the following?

With me it is still very much a hit and miss affair, but this particular one was an unexpected hit. The man turned up out of the grey and almost immediately disappeared again. I was very lucky indeed!

Ok Mick     Still means I have to find another picture as Abers beat me to my first choice.  We still need Hevans to cut his down to two as well. I keep finding some excellent pictures by muckypup but he has not been on the site for ages so it makes me wonder whether I should choose one of his.. :-\.   I'll carry on looking.

Des, we used to have the monthly vote, but mostly it attracted no interest, so it was abandoned. One thing I do know is that this sounds a whole lot easier to get to grips with.

Howard, I know this is a slow process, especially on this gallery setup.

But if you go to the previous images of the week (http://cameracraniums.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=290) album, and click the first thumbnail image, then click the intermediate image to bring up the full size, you then have a choice, ether click the little slideshow button, or click on each pic to move to the next one.  If you see one you like click the X button, and it will land you on that pic's page.  You might find this a little quicker.

And a tip, press f11 on your keyboard to make your browser full screen before clicking image to full size.  The images should adjust to fit screen.

I don't think it really matters if we choose two pictures by other members. At the end of the day its only a bit of fun.  On your second point, I have had a look at the pictures submitted and two are technically not this years pictures.   1.  Reinardina's ' The Gateway' was taken on 29.12.10 but added to the gallery on 16.06.11     2.   Abers picture ' The longest mile '  was taken on 04.08.09 but was IOTW on 12.07.11 so I think it may be a bit picky not to include them. Let me know what you think.  :)

Could do with a few more before I set up the poll this afternoon   :'(  so come on folks

Just a thought for 2012 - if everyone who looked at the chosen IOTW gave it a score using the stars, the one with the highest score at the end of the month could be IOTM and be placed in a thread - at the end of the year there could be a poll of the 12 images to find the IOTY. There could also then be another poll like this current one where people could nominate their favourites from those that had'nt actually been IOTW so that the many great photos that had'nt been chosen during the year would have a second chance to make the front page.

Well, if they have to have been taken this year, then that helps a lot with the selection. I'm gonna go with: (I'll also add them to the entries thread).

michaelb104's "Gerbera just after watering":
I love the way this is a colourless flower shot. Normally such shots concentrate on the bold and vivid colours, but this one really shows up the texture in the flower. Just Beautiful.

Howard's "Opposite Curves":
I love the complementary geometry and the umbrella pattern in the glass. It's a difficult object to light well, and Howard's done a great job.

Could you withdraw the Longest Mile please as it doesn't meet the entry requirements. It was a combination of two images taken at different times. Thanks to Irv though for nominating it.

I thought the idea was, to select one of your own pictures and one from another members gallery, and as it's year end, shouldn't it include only pictures taken in 2011?

When were the two photos merged into a single shot? Is the photo created at the time the shutter is released? Or in this case, is the image created when the darkroom work is done?

I'd say keep it in.

Let's not get silly about this - it's supposed to be a bit of fun, so if it's nominated then that's good enough for me.

Well I have left things as long as possible hoping for more entries but we will have to make do with what we have. I have just got in from the shop ( Very busy day but not complaining ) so I will set up the poll in about an hour after I have had some food. :legit:
