Where do you find your main musical listening originates from?

Hmmph. For me the best music comes from all of the above. As, of course, does some of the worst. And I can't believe that you missed out the 18th century; Handel, Haydn and Mozart to name but a few. Shame on you!

I was a semi-pro rock musician for more than 20 years. My listening tastes are pretty broad. I appreciate and enjoy anything that is played well or well crafted, which, of course, pretty much excludes just about all jazz. Our drummer used to describe jazz, accurately I think, as the noise that a band makes when it is falling down the stairs.

Using a musical instrument to make a noise (ie jazz) is a long way from using one to make music. . . discuss

I should perhaps have narrowed it to what's termed 'popular'. As to jazz - as someone who regards John Coltrane as a musical god I would beg to differ!

Not being overly familiar with Robbie Coltrane's dad I have just had a bit of a listen. Ten minutes was more than enough (although not, of course, for an entire piece). Makes Slipnot sound positively melodic 

Each to his own I guess, but I think our drummer was definitely not wrong.  I could almost feel my brain trying to shut my ears off  . . 

The thing about music, the wonderful thing about music, is that it is so personal and so emotionally powerful.

My favourite classical is Haydn, although I am partial to anything Baroque really. And modern stuff, anything from Dream Theater, Marillion or Pendragon (despite the latter having probably the worst singer in the world). And for a lift some Australian pub band music, AC/DC or Airbourne, or some Southern rock like Black Stone Cherry. Or for those mellow moments some folk from Megson ("Follow it on", one of the most moving ballads ever) or Roddy Woomble. I also listen to stuff I've recorded over the years, which hardly anyone ever bought, but it was fun doing it.

Anything that kicks off a pleasurable emotion.
I suppose if you are a trained musician you will be more critical than someone who is not.

Why I said anything that kicks of a pleasurable emotion is because some artists make me want to throw up. I'm not too sure of his name, but there's some idiot who seems to think he's Sinatra reborn and tries to sing all the old chaps songs in his style and absolutely murders them. Is it McCallam? Why he gets airtime I'll never know, perhaps it's because those that rate him don't know the original.

With Trane it's important which period you try to liten to. The last stuff he did is unlistenable to all but the most avid free jazz fans - his best stuff is'nt always immediately easy but there's a whole catalogue of recordings he made of standards which is almost easy listening - he was simply one of the best saxophonists ever. Each to his own of course but having grown up at the time when it was all 'beat combos' and r and b I find after listening to a bit of cool jazz from the late fifties rock music sounds very boring and simple.

The '60's sowed the seeds of musical creativity.
The 70's watched the musical harvest grow.
The '80's reaped the harvest.
The '90's watched the harvest decompose.
The '00's had the harvest decompose completely into some sort of watered-down... something, which then had to have sugar added to it for it to remain palatable.

I doubt we'll ever see musical movements such as "punk" and "new romatics" in a same era again. Various people, including musicians, say that todays music is too safe... there's no uncertainty anymore, and that producers are afraid of being bold. For my tastes, todays music is too pre-processed, and coated with layers of saccharin.

Has to be the 60's for me, I'm an old northern soul fan,    which is when most of this music was cut. Still get a buzz out of watching the clips from Wigan casino on youtube, I've been told by friends that they've seen me on some of the clips in the background,  but can't say I've ever noticed.

I always felt (until Eminem) that rap music was a spelling mistake where someone had deliberately left off the c from the beginning.

Hayseed Dixie. Now they are different/refreshing. I've got two or three of their cd's somewhere.  As for musical tastes, I appreciate any music where the artists actually play instruments and not the karaoke style X-factor crap and other singers who sing on top of a faceless backing track. I studied classical music for O-level and still listen to some occasionally. If you like popular classical tunes with a modern(well 15yrs ago) feel to them try the Japanese synth player called Tomita. Again I must have a few of his albums about somewhere. Live from Linz is my favourite where he bombarded his audience with 13 channels of sound including one from a helicopter.  Most of the stuff I listen to is the old rock stuff ie Pink floyd, led zep, deep purple etc but some of the modern groups are pretty good as well.
