Not a backslapping or well done thread. Critique only.
I will start it off with a pic.
You can only post the next pic if you have given some critique on the previous pic

Alf, i had ago in shadows/highlights in PS, brought the background out quite nice, also took the kinda highlights on his head down a bit, would be worth having a play around.
My Turn now
Done this one to death from the noise it had in, any thoughts on it would be good

Never critised a photo, 1st for me but for what its worth.
i like the golden colours in the sky pity about the dark areas, with my limited experience maybe if you layer in photoshop and each layer looking at the shadow and dark areas where you can increase the dark areas to bring out more detail, then flatten the layers, i'm sure it may improve the shot --Then again it may not!!!,
I,m new to all this what do i know :D

you now have to post a pic after the critique

This is a good idea and I started a kind of "are you interested" thread on the same subject in the general discussion.  Admin. might be interested.  I also like that you want it not to be an "atta boy" thread, but real critique.

The difficulty with this thread is that it's buried in an area that many people may not look.  Also because the images are small it's not the best was to critique an image.   A photograph has many subtleties in it...i.e. tonal value, lighting, etc.,  that can't be appreciated small.

I'd post an image here if I knew how to upload it to a thread!  I've only uploaded to my gallery so far.

This is a nice study of Daisy, nice eyelight and you caught a good expression.   Detail in the coat is excellent, no dark spots where it gets lost.  Only thing I find a little distracting it the white part of the b.g. but I realise with dogs that you have to get ''em where you find 'em sometimes.

One little note about a critique thread such as this - if the responder has to then submit an image does that mean we're limiting the responses to one?

So here's my submission.

hi Sheila - there's not much I don't like. I cannot fault your composition whith the gradual looming from the little to the largest of thee smoke stacks.   there is a good feeling (or should I say disgusting feeling) of them belching out their noxious, choking crud.
whether its intentional or not I'm not sure about the hard edges to the dominant black cloud. on the one hand the flowing shape echoes the outer edges of the chimneys, also singles it out, but does it need to? it looks to me thatthe shot might have degraded over continued saves  (would it do this?)  would be nice to know whether you intended that effect - how will be know?.
(hopefully in a hundred years, if mankind is still here, no smoke like this)

my submission is the heron which I shot last thursday evening.  while I quite like it I feel its lacking.

sometimes when shots  like yours show smoking towers chimneys ,etc they seem to romance the scene, i lke what you have done here ,to me  this shot shows the reality of pollution  i like the nitty gritty approach you have taken good shot.

Pippa
i like the colours produced here, the  deep refletions in the pond of the trees is quite good ,nice sharp photo but i find that i am staining to look at the heron i don't need to ofcourse  but the photo lends it's self to that ,for me anyway, maybe a tighter crop of the photo may help to lend a pleasing restfull scene.
BEWARE!! :D
ON BOTH COMMENTS, ;) though lol, It takes me all my time to critise my own work in which i do poorly i am only a newbie on the digital front, so take these comments with a pinch of salt if you feel i tend to offend your work in any way

pippafox

Soltek, just a quick note before you upload yours/
offended? mind? absolutely not.  even if you said it was crap, and explained why - thats ok in my book. much rather hear a truth.

soltek

this photo was taken when i visited london it was shot in colour it.s my first attemt to play with the colours in cs2 ;)

alan1572

soltek, some pictures i feel were taken just so you can tweek it a little, i think the tweaks are perfect for the shot you have taken, well done.
