Where is your card reader pluged in ( front or back of computer ) ? or are you using the built in one on the computer ?
I have two card readers one pluged into the back of my desk computer and the other pluged into the back of my laptop.
Someone told me they work faster this way and it as worked for me. 100 shots ( large jpes & Raw ) download in about 6 to 9 minuates.

Also I bought a wireless remote for my Canon cameras last week of a shop on e.bay ( its basic but seems to work ok ). I will let you know the details later when I look at the invoice. :legit:

My old card reader is not usb2 afaik and makes no difference which port it is connected to.
Its reading SanDisk Ultra11 4gb CF cards containing RAW files.
By comparison Ive used it to transfer raw files from a sd card and its not been as slow

Got one of these cheap wired remotes for my Canon, and it works fine.  Only £7.00 inc postage  ;) http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_1&products_id=103044

if you want it much quicker get a firewire reader, if your pc doesnt have firewire get an expansion card for it :) maybe the laptop has firewire ?  using a usb2 reader will of course speed things up, but only if your pc/laptop has usb2 ports, if not then as with firewaire you will need an expansion card, but in that case you may as well get firewire ;)

the front and back thing is due to older motherboards having usb2 ports at the back and then an expansion port going to the front using usb1 legacy ports on the motherboard or cheap expansion ports that only support usb1 going to the front.

Which software are you using ?
I find Nikon Transfer whizzes through my D200 cards

I used to use a Lexar Professional Card reader, both USB and UDMA - very quick. I only stopped using it because mynew PC has one as quick built in.

I use Downloader Pro to pull the files off (http://www.breezesys.com/products.htm) - which allows each file to be automatically filed, renamed, tags etc added. It will also convert to DNG and several other things that I don't use!

I find it useful as I can add the camera model to the filename - so it stops conflicts of filenames being the same in the same directory! Almongst others!!!
