Anyone here use or have used a GPS Unit for their camera ? Particular Nikons.
Looking at getting either an attachment for the D7100 or maybe a handheld.
Like the idea of the attachment via hotshoe and cable as it writes location data to exif, but some prices are silly and some reviews not good.
Im going to be carrying out some surveys on moorland and forest streams and becks so need to record my finds accurately.
Have seen a 3rd party unit on Amazon which gets decent reviews which may be worth a punt.

Not my line but just a thought; I wonder whether there is a Remote control App to operate your camera via tablet/phone with the GPS integrated within it ?

Or just take the same picture with your phone with geotagging turned on? I'd do that but with my TG-4 which has GPS built in.

Yep, I think that's the way I'm going to test my workflow for accuracy.
I use the Nikon unit (GPSN1 I think) with my D700.
Its addictive as I enjoy looking back at where I've been (View NX will overlay markers on a map where photos were taken).
It does hit the battery life hard though.

I used to do this some time ago but now don't bother. I used a cheap GPS data logger that was just in my camera bag (cost about £20 of eBay). When I got back home I downloaded the track data from it and used some free software I found online that read the track and used the time stamp on both to write the lat and long to the EXIF of the images. Sorry I can't remember what the software was as I am now on a Mac and that was in my PC days, a Google search may throw it up or something similar.

Ive ordered the unit off Amazon at £29.
Will run it side by side with iphone and see how accurate the data is.
For info I will be carrying out some surveys looking for, or activity of, water voles, Otter,mink and a few other species.
The little streams and becks are on forestry land so I need to record my data and finds accurately with photos.
Will feedback how I get on.
