ABERS

A year or so ago I took a few pictures of some Jewish guys at a demonstration and put a few on Flickr. I was approached by an on-line magazine to put them on their web site.

The site address is

http://www.zehayom.com/

If you take a look, on the home page is a link to a slide show. Take a look and within it are some stunning pictures of a life that is usually only familiar to those that follow the Orthodox Jewish faith. The pictures of the celebrations have within them wonderful little individual cameos of young and old. Documentary photography at its very best.

Some cracking photos Abbers. It seems very male dominated society like some of the Asian regilons.  8)

Some wonderful pictures! And indeed, the women are kept in the background; all very biblical.

There aren't many orthodox Jews here in Southampton, but when I do come across some, they always look so serious and almost severe; never realised they could have so much fun! There are more smiles there, then you see on the average party/wedding shot!

Some of the activities (the dancing), reminded me of old fashioned weddings, I used to attend as a child in the fifties, where everyone joined in.

Have we lost this sort of pure simple enjoyment?

It reminds me of the award winning photography, Generation to Generation, my friend Bernard Mendoza http://www.mendozaphotography.com/ shot documenting the Jewish community. Some nice shots there Alan.

Thanks for the link Alan. Photography can really give an insight into a world, none of us would realistically know of otherwise.

Don't count the days "Guest," make the days count!.

This is good timing. I've been thinking for quite a while about photographing the Hassidic community in Stamford Hill. This will spur me on.
