100 OR SO YEARS ON

ABERS

Watched an interesting programme last night about home movies, and what they tell us about what sort of world we lived in then.
You know the sort of thing

20'/30's People pointing at cars going through villages, everyone wearing flat caps on outings to the seaside in charabancs.

40's /50's Street parties, victory parades, national service.

50's/60's  The arrival of immigrants from the Windies, Brixton riots. love-ins, festivals.

Now if we go into the future from here say 100 years, what would people make of our current world from the pictures posted on internet sites?

"They seemed to have lived mainly by the sea laying on their stomachs where there were perpetual sunrise/sunsets. The sea at that time appeared to have a milky consistency, perhaps the forwarning of global warming. There were few happy people about, all the pictures showed angry/puzzled/bemused faces, except when they attended weddings, of which there seemed to be plenty.

The landscapes seemed to have formed the basis of all the picture post cards that are now avidly collected by viewers of the TV programme Antiques Road Show now entering it's 208th series.

There was a tendency for all the pictures to be accompanied by vast strings of numbers stating what equipment and camera setting were used to achieve them and if a flash was used."

What do you think they will be saying?

Oh good it's stopped raining! ;)

Sadly, most of the photos from this period will be of the mobile phone snapshot variety, and not of the more artistic variety.

TBH, just looking at photos from the 80's and 90's is just as amusing - the ascendency of the punks, mobile phones, car style changes ... the only things that remained the same are the B&W shots of old wrinkly people with "character".

BTW, what station was the show on (BBC/ITV?)? Will it be repeated? It'd be interesting to see it.

You may be able to see it on

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tj79t/Home_Movie_Roadshow_Episode_3/

Episodes 1&2 are available apparently. Haven't seen them yet.

Thanks Alan,

I see that it is being repeated tonight on BBC2 @ 23:30 (or so). Unfortunately, we can't see them on the iplayer from abroad (not without playing with IP numbers and virtual lans). :'(
