Title: CPAGB
Post by: Sandy on August 24, 2014, 09:15:15 AM
I had thought of putting a reply in the bemused section, but actually I'm feeling more shell shocked this morning. I attended a PAGB workshop in Maidstone to hear about entering for a CPAGB. The morning was fine we heard all about what happens and saw some images at different levels. In the afternoon we could show our prints and I had taken 25 and needed 10 for a CPAGB , there were four tables with different set of judges at each and the idea was to go round and see what each of them said. They all chose about 14 which they said could be worthy of a CPAGB most needed a little work. The thing is some did not get chosen at all so I know to dump those ones, but they all had different ideas about the other ones and what work was needed.

Didn't know what CPAGB stands for (still a newbie in photography), so I looked it up.
Pretty good show, to have fourteen chosen!

Goes to show again, that even experienced people see different things in photographs, and have different ideas on what work is needed.

The PAGB awards are a good measure of how your photography is viewed by other recognised and competent photographers, however in my view it's something to aim at rather than a reason to be able to put a string of letters after your name. It would seem Sandy that from the initial advice day that you should be able to satisfy the judges with the prints that you took for scrutiny.

The PAGB awards differ from those of the RPS at the middle and top level in as much the ARPS and FRPS are more directly looking for a style rather than an overall ability as with the DAGPB and the MGPAB.

To be able to enter for the PAGB awards you need to be a member of a club affiliated to the PAGB, to be able to enter for the RPS awards you obviously need to be a member of the RPS, although you can enter a panel for the LRPS without joining.

Whether either tickles you fancy is a moot subject however, and raises many pros and cons. ::)

This thread has a lot of FLAs and a few TLAs and even FiLAs.  The only one I recognise is RPS.

This totally baffled me, so I googled the unknown letter combinations. Now I know.

You could try it too. Good luck.
