Image of the week / Re: IOTW 10th June 2013

I have just seen that I got IOTW, thank you very much Karen  :)

I like snapping door knobs, so thought I'd keep an eye out for an interesting one this week.  I found one, which I think might win the most revolting doorknob competition, if nothing else.  At first glance, it looks like the sculpture of a hand, but the more you look at it, the more realistic it appears, to the point where I think it's quite disturbing ... it begs the question as to where the rest of the body is.

Probably inside the egg it's trying to crack  :o  ;)

Nothing from me this week but may be I will get some free time before I get rusty -  :legit:

So, the consensus is that upgrading is not worth the bother. I downloaded the trial version and reached the same conclusion after a few hours of playing with it. It has a few more mainly gimmicky things, but the RAW converter is still just as limited, and it still won't run Nik.

Against this is the far better ACR in Elements, but that doesn't allow the user to record actions (scripts to the PSP mob), and still, after all these years, no curves adjustment layer, no layer grouping and no 16 bit editing. I seriously think that Adobe are actually deskilling Elements and that it will become less and less attractive to 'serious' amateurs as time goes by. And yet most of us, I am sure, simply cannot afford to 'rent' Photoshop. I know I can't.

Hopefully the next iteration of Serif Photoplus will be able to run the Nik Collection. Fingers crossed  :)

Enjoy your break Paul.

Don't forget your wellies, it's a tad soggy (OK flooded) down there. :o

I thought I was going to a high up fortress of a place? :o No room for wellies with the camera gear - it`s bad enough fitting in some clothes with a 10kg limit. We`re only sticking around the cite and on the canal so we`ll plodge if necessary

It was all the lovely colours in your painter shot that got my vote. (Dave would have been my second choice though.)

Lenses / Re: Sigma 50-500 mm lens

Exactly the reason I had to send my Bigma to Sigma. It is possible to tighten but I am afraid you have to take the ring at the mount end of first and you risk damaging the electronics.
The loosening of the Bigma is a well known problem. Harry had his shaken apart in a Landrover when on Safari, mine shook loose while I pulled it in a Pelican hardcase on solid wheels over a gravel path. The outer coating on the lens has a habit of coming of, making the lens look rather tattered. Sigma service is very good, but because mine was an old model, (they don't make the non OS anymore) they had to send it to Japan for repair. 8 Weeks turnaround and around £200. They would have also replaced the outer barrel for that price, but they could not find one even in Japan, so I just have the old battered one back, but at least it will be working and is calibrated.
Hope that helps.
Simon

Looks like I'm in the same boat. They don't have parts to repair anymore. They'll try to tighten the screws, but if any parts are broken I'm out of luck.

Congratulations from me too. My vote was among the many that 'went' for Dave. Great shot of a man at work.

Thank you who voted for my painter!

I also have used PSP since its very early days and still prefer it to Elements for many tasks. But I now use Elements 9 (which came free with the now not-so-new machine)  as I prefer its organiser and find its RAW processing simpler - though PSP (mine is X4) can give better results if you take time. That combination does all I need so I see no reason at all to upgrade either one.
